Pain in top of wrist - Possible causes?
« on: March 10, 2011, 09:45:04 PM »
I've been having pain in the top of my wrist at the point of release.  In playing with my wrist, I've narrowed down the source of the pain to the act of squeezing larger objects between my thumb and middle finger while my wrist is in a locked or cupped position (like squeezing a 2-liter pop bottle or Nerf football).

My middle finger itself does not hurt, but when I squeeze with that finger there is a sharp pain in the top of the wrist.  There isn't any wrist pain when I squeeze with my ring finger.

I have been bowling all year and haven't made any span changes, but this seems to have gotten worse recently as I've been in more tournaments.  I'm starting to wonder if the span on my middle finger is too long...could that potentially cause an injury such as I've described?  I've also noticed that the tip of my middle finger is getting calloused, which I don't really remember happening much in the past..

Typically, in my experience, there is something that you are doing different in your release that is causing this.  You may be coming out of the ball differently, or trying to "hit up " on the ball.  The calluses on your finger tips are a clue to this.  Back in the 90's when it was  all about grip it and rip it, and hitting up on the ball was encouraged, I had the tips of both my ring finger and my middle finger callused over.  I took a summer off, revamped my swing and release and they have not come back.

You will want to pay attention to how you are releasing the ball because many times wrist pain is not followed far from elbow pain.

Good Luck

Looks like you might be topping the ball. Think about it.  Hold the ball with your hand on the top.  Now, lift it straight up.  All the force to do this is on the top of your hand.  You will put a lot of strain on the back of your hand and your wrist.  Could be that your thumb has gotton a bit larger and is rotating in the thumb hole instead of coming out cleanly and making you come over the top.  Take a video and see if this might be the cause.

Thanks Stan and Mighty Buffalo.  After bowling last night and paying attention to what my arm was doing,  I think you are both correct.

I found that I didn't have pain as long as I focused on keeping the weight of the ball resting on my index during my back-swing, release, and follow-through.

This told me that I had gone back to a bad habit that I thought I had broken years ago.  Although, I have an inside-to-out release at the point of delivery, my natural tendency is for my hand to move to the outside of the ball during the back-swing and then manage to return to the inside of the ball by the point of release.  It's this exact motion of trying to bring the ball back into position that is causing the pain.

A few years ago I had a lesson at Nationals in Reno and he said that my style is unusual in that, typically, when bowlers' hands move to the outside of the ball during the backswing, they usually keep it outside of the ball through release (like an old-timey full-roller 1960's release).  Whereas, I was naturally going to the outside during back-swing and quickly forcing my hand back to the inside before releasing the ball.  Obviously, there is a lot of wasted motion in this and apparently it must put too much additional stress on my wrist because the difference was night-and-day when I focused on staying behind the ball by keeping the weight on my index finger throughout the swing last night.

Looks like I'll need to continue working on this and thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

No problem, I've had my share of wrist pain over the past 20 years of bowling.  My natural style has me with a broken wrist to start with and all the way through my backswing.  When I hit the top of my backswing, I let the weight of the ball bring my hand to the proper position.  I tried changing this over the summer after watching some Norm Duke videos, and having a straight wrist throughout the backswing, and my wrist started hurting more  I tried the change to try to get out of a funk, and was thinking that may have been part of my problem.  Lo and behold, I have gone back to my own style and the pain went away, along with my scores going back up.  Needless to say, sometimes textbook doesn't work for everyone, but if what you are doing causes pain, that obviously isn't right either.  Good Luck!
