Title: Bowling app ideas?
Post by: TwicK on March 06, 2014, 07:22:41 AM
I wanted to get into Android programming, so I've been working on a bowling stats app. Now that I've gotten a decent understanding of things, I'm looking for some suggestions and feature ideas. Right now, it does the basics: tracks frame by frame pin fall for league play and has basic stats that can be queried, by league, ball, lanes, oil pattern, etc. What other features would you suggest to add? Any feature that is missing from all of the other apps that you'd like to see? I'm just looking for some ideas for what I can work on next. If you are interested in seeing what is available so far, you can find it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wickert.bowlingnight

Couple of related ideas.

Ability to track mtiple bowlers as in a league or high school setting.

Related to the high school angle, ability to do baker games and note the bowlers and frames they're are bowling.

Agree with multi player.

How about tournament tracking considerations. Qualifying. Plus/minus (with or without handicap). Match play record. Also in the tournaments my son does there are bonus pins for winning matches in match play. A way to account for that would be cool.

The ability to add notes or observations for a frame and/or game.

I do have notes for each game, but not for each frame. I believe the multi player piece would be fairly easy to do for regular games, but more work for baker games. I also plan to add a practice mode for adding games unrelated to leagues or tournaments.

Any suggestions for how tournaments should be set up? I don't bowl in tournaments very often, so there are probably a lot of formats or ideas I'm missing out on related to tournament play.

There is already an app for android users called My Lane Play. It keeps stats, will do individual or team bowling and keep track of your equipment as well. I have been using it for the past 3 years. Best app I have seen.

Here are some ideas:

1. Ability for bowler to track exact pin fall per frame (What pins where left).

2. Have user be able to list ball was used an each throw.

3. Allow bowler to place standing position, target point, and break point (exit point) for each strike ball.

- Target point option to mark whether bowler is using Target Dots, Arrows, or something else.

- Break Point/Exit Point should Board and Length Down the Lane.

- Also have a Result Option to overlay Target and Break/Exit Point.

- Next Frame use the exact same criteria (Ball, Standing Position, Target, Break/Exit Point) from previous frame. If a bowler is dialed in there is no need for that bowler to be constantly putting in the same thing every frame.

4. Option for the bowler to mark it was a good strike ball.

5. Allow bowler to place their spare system into the app. Used as a reference.

6. Ball History Chart: Any purchased ball should have a total history listed. Purchase Date, Original Surface. Layout. Then a date and time of any changes made to ball. Resurface, Layout, Oil Extraction (Anything).

- Also a way through app to figure out # games a ball has been thrown. Letting the bowler know when its time for some ball maintenance. Maybe have a default setting, but allow the user to modify this due to some bowling balls needing attention sooner than others.

You haven't seen "Frames" then...

Strike out Stats is another good one for android.

That all being said, I'm pretty sure the OP realizes that these exist, he's looking to create something new, maybe better, and looking for suggestions from bowlers on what other programs might be lacking...

On the topic of keeping track of balls and usage. Having it default to a specified or last ball used for spares. Sometime my son and I vary what we throw to see if it works better. Plastic for single pin spares, but could be plastic or even strike ball for say the bucket. If it kept track of the percentages based on ball as a subcategory of spare makes. I realize real nitpicky, but hey you asked :)

Yep, I know of some of the other apps, on the plus side, mine is free. I mainly started as a learning experience until it go to the current point of being good enough to share with others.

It does allow for tracking pin fall per frame, but thanks for some of the other feed back, I didn't even think about tracking other information about bowling balls.

I use straiker app for android. I like it because it shows which pins fell under each frame on the screen. Shows more info on smaller areas

How about one that tracks patterns, lane conditions, and your equipment on such said conditions and patterns...it would tell you the ideal ball to use in your arsenal

It does currently let you query your stats by oil pattern and ball, so you'd be able to see which ball gives you the best results on each pattern.

Here is your challenge, using the built in camera most phones have, create a RPM calculator.

Let the bowler have someone take a short video of their shot and your app could give the RPM, ball speed, possibly even tilt and axis rotation.

That's awesome ...and added to calculating revs and or axis and speed it could determine breakpoint and how it changes as games progress. That would be something

How about diagrams of how to pick up tricky spares.  Including where to stand.

When reviewing stats on leaves or opens, if your looking at the stays for all the times you've let say the 3-10, being able to see a list if the times you've left it and either view the notes you made during that frame or being able to click on a line in the list to take you to the frame/game where you left it to view the info you took during the frame.
