Brickguy221 -- Weight change?

Brickguy221 -- I saw in the Track forum that you're going back to 15 lb equipment.  You seemed so happy with the 14 lb, what changed your mind?  --  JohnP

John, I still like 14# equipment. The problem I ran into after I used 14# equipment for a while is....... due to it's lighter weight I started trying to muscle the ball, thus destroying timing, accuracy, leverage, etc. Although I don't have a great free swing, I can't muscle the 15# balls as bad as I do the 14's and thus, I swing the 15's better.

Brick,

Most likely, changing weight to 15lbs will not have the effect you think it will (reducing muscling). If you have late timing in your approach leading into your slide you will muscle the ball no matter how light or heavy. In fact, reducing the weight might be more benifical as you will be able to muscle more effectively and correct or make up for the late timing. By increasing the weight you might have the reverse effect of constantly sending the ball right and not down your target line.

Muscling is do to a mechanical problem and not a weight problem. If you simply allow the weight of the ball to swing your armswing and start the ball at the proper point to complete the swing as you complete your slide you will not muscle. It wont matter if the ball is 14 or 15.

pin-chaser, You are probably right in most cases, but I can swing the 15# easier than the 14#, plus I can't muscle the 15# like I do the 14#. Also on the 14# I developed the habit of hitting up on the ball and for whatever reason I couldn't stop it. I don't deny that I have 2-3 mechanical problems (some due to some health problems) but I seem to be able to survive the problems better with 15# balls.
