Bowling bad...What do you do?
« on: May 31, 2005, 05:05:23 AM »
I bowled a tournament this weekend and I threw the ball like garbage.  So, I figured maybe it was just a fluke, so I bowled a few more squads, and nothing changed.

I'm now curious.  When you start throwing the ball bad, and you're not really sure where your problem is, what do you do?  Personally, I'm going to my local center, throw a few games, take my time, slow down, relax and just throw shots to see if it comes back, maybe pinpoint my problem, etc.

What do you guys do?

If your in a tournament or competition, it can be hard to relax and just throw some shots. Ypu should think positive (always helps). Don´t think on what your doing wrong, think on what you are doing right.
Or else you can write a "diary" on all your trainings. Then you can look in it and check how you should peform your "perfect shot".

I begin by slowing down, especially my feet.  Usually that's the root of my problem.  I also tend to overthrow, so I concentrate on relaxing my hand and practicing an open-hand release repeatedly.

For me their are two options that work best.

1. A good coach. If you have one that is willing to watch and work with you they should be able to help straighten you out. (I guess an experienced friend who knows your game could help to)

2. Get out the video camera. If you have old footage of when you WERE bowling well that is even better. Tape yourself and compare it to how you're bowling now. Really helps spot any problems.

3. If 1 and 2 aren't options, go out and practice, a lot. The thing is practice your spares, not your strikes. Don't know why  but if I practice spares the strikes seem to come back to me after a while.

Good luck with whatever you try.

i have a clip of what my perfect release should be...and anything that deviates from it i know would be my problem....swing and steps i could easily pinpoint and can adjust rather quickly...

you should always have a clip of you perfect shot and observe every little detail..that way you have a mental picture of what your perfect shot should be...

If it's something I started doing during the course of the day, I try to figure it out on the spot. If it's something that's been going on for a few sessions, I try to get with my coach. If it's been going on a while, the LAST thing I want to do is practice. I don't want to practice in any more bad habits.

I just tell myself I'm not being myself. If you just relax and throw the ball, I find it is great. All it takes is one perfect shot to get back on track. When I pull myself out of a slump I get excited. I throw the shot and it smashes the pocket and I just say "Get outta here!" Trust me. It feels awesome. I even give myself goosebumps.

Count steps, make sure im in timing. If not then try and figure where im going wrong from set 1 - step 5.  And then attemp to fix it, usually i slow down when doing this as well.  Take my time and try to be fluid to make sure i can repeat everything.

Basically go through a mental checklist of what i should be doing to have a "good" release.
