Bowling Bags, Carrying Them To Leagues, 3 Balls+
« on: November 08, 2016, 07:31:51 AM »
Going to make this short because this is a question I have never understood the reality of...

Currently I use a 4 ball bag from Storm, the two layer one with wheels where you can separate the top 2 balls from bottom 2 balls for transportation and ease.

However, I see many people in my leagues using 3 ball bags (the triple in a row) and some even with 3 ball bags with another ball attached at the handle.  How are you are lifting these bags into and out of the car, into and out of the house?  My biggest struggle on bowling night is just getting into and out of the alley.  Keep in mind I'm pretty athletic (6'0" 200lbs) but I still have issues with this.  Then I see people carrying 2 ball bags on their shoulders.  How?

I don't get it.  Either you old guys are using 13lbs or less or you are all freaks of nature.  My 4 ball bag with balls is well over 70lbs.  I'm guessing a 3 ball tote is at least 40lbs.

I just don't get it lol.  :P

3 ball totes are around 50 pounds with 15lb balls, they are not too bad to carry in and out of cars.  Reason I switched to those is actually how easy it is to put 3 of them in the car for tournament, vice the bigger bags.

I don't get why you don't get it. A 3 ball roller is about 50 pounds with 3 15lb balls. It's not that hard to lift 50 pounds into and out of a vehicle

For some people, maybe. But certainly not for all.

I had the rigid 900Global 3-bagger for a while, and strained my back at least three times pulling it out of the trunk. It's not always pure weight. My trunk was deep, and given the angle I had to lift with the length of the bag, it was awkward. I sold the bag after the last incident.

My softer Vise 3-ball bags flex and are easier to manipulate, so I have more confidence lifting them. Still, 2-ball configurations are easier to toss around, and that's what I use most of the time. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I carry 5.  I have a 2 ball tote that I throw on my shoulder and a storm triple tote.

It's like the one in the top of that photo.  Actually quite easy from a transporting POV.

I use a vise 3 ball tote for league with a single ball bag for my plastic ball.  Very light and easy to maneuver. For tournaments I use two of the vise 3 ball totes. No issue getting them in and out of a full size truck and I'm 5'10" 180lbs.

I use to use the Brunswick 3 ball roller with single ball add on and it worked fine as well. Carrying a two ball bag by itself isn't an issue but it and a 3 ball roller is more of a bulky head ache then anything.  Which is why I went to the two 3 ball totes instead.

My $.02...
The guys saying 50 is easy haven't had back issues or they would know better. Reinjuring my back is really easy. I did it three months ago with my 3 ball bag and couldn't bowl that night or stand straight for the next 2 days. We all used to be able to carry it, but due to either injury or age, it simply isn't reality. I don't want a 4 ball bag, but I'm getting one, because 30 is a lot easier than 45. Makes all the difference in the world. And I get to carry a 4th ball. :)
As for the totes, to each his own. They aren't for me, too little freedom of motion and stopping at doors, etc, but If I needed 6 I'd do 2x3.....

If you are 6' 200 lbs. and "pretty athletic" and you think 50 lbs is a lot to lift or you can't carry a 2 ball tote on your shoulder you probably aren't as athletic as you think.

I agree. Each person is different because of age or injury

I drag 3, carry 2. If I was a better bowler like several years ago, I'd carry 2.

Yeah some have seen me on here in tournaments.  And yeah I can lift a lot, or at least relatively, mid-tier strength totals for powerlifting (500lbs deadlift and 405lbs squat).  That doesn't mean that lifting 50lbs out of a car while trying to find leverage in order to not bend at my back, while trying to not strain my shoulder/arm before bowling starts is going to be "easy".  I always use the ramp with my 4 ball roller because I'd rather not lift 70lbs 2 feet off the ground so I can skip the ramp and take the 3 steps needed to get in the bowling center.  So when I see people with 3 ball bags in particular, I know they can't take those apart unless they take out the balls individually or something.  50lbs on a deadlift in the gym with a straight bar is easy.  50lbs with unbalanced weights and with balls that push center of gravity outside of your body (when powerlifters get injured most of the time) is pretty heavy IMO.  It's worse when you need to fit it in the passenger seat or trunk where you have no leverage.

Depends on the vehicle.  Out of an SUV rear where there is no lip to move around like on a sedan, it's not too bad.  But try putting 50lbs of bowling balls in a sedan or coupe or a trunk of a regular car and see how hard it is to lift that weight over the frame of the car and drop them 2-3ft below into the trunk.  I don't care how strong you are, your CG will be outside of your body and you will be placing torque and shear stresses on either your shoulders, spine, or hips.

I use a Storm 4 ball roller, which I take apart and load in two steps. Up until about two years ago, I just lifted the entire thing at once and put it in the trunk.

Then the back problems arrived.

I have to agree with Necro, it's not about the amount of weight, it's the twisting to move it to the correct place during a dead lift.

Well I've only ever had a sedan. Use the lip as an advantage so your cg doesn't go outside of your body. You're lifting the bag too high placing extra stress on your body if you have to drop the bag 2-3 feet into the trunk
