Bowling Ball Advise

Hey everyone!!!

I've been bowling in leagues now for about a year now. I've been using Raw Hammer Doom (I don't have a spare ball), and it's getting pretty beat up. I'm looking for a new ball... nothing too pricy... but something that can handle 10+ games a week.

I'm not sure what type of bowler I am (not fermilular with the terms), but I throw with a moderate hook (throw straight at the second arrow... hook to the pocket). I have moderate speed (10 mph)and have low axis of rotation. I only bowl at the local bowling alley, and I'm not sure what how oily the lanes are. I average around 160 at the moment, but I think I should be doing better.

I'm kind of a big guy (not sure if that matters), and have very big fingers (been getting blisters on the thumb, not sure why). The pro shop guy did a pretty bad job at finding the best drill specs for me, and I don't really know how to find out whats best for me. Any help their would be very helpfull.

I really have no idea what type of ball I should be looking for... I've been thinking about Hammer Anger or Hammer Toxic, but I'm open to anything. Again I'm looking to up my game so any suggestions would be great.

Well, I wonder if 10mph is really your speed. That would be really low?

Anyway, if you take care of a ball, cleaning it after each set and wipe off the oil after each shot, a ball can last very long. Taking a little care prolongs ball life a lot, and with an oil extraction or resurfacing at the pro shop you can get most cases back into business.

Without knowing more details about your game and style, it is hard to make a recommendation. The Doom is a very versatile piece and still in production, so it would IMHO be 1st choice. The Toxis is another good replacement, slightly stronger. The Anger is an oil ball - it would make sense if you face lots/long oil or were speed-dominant, but this does not seem to be the case? It could be simply too much ball for the situation at hand.

An alternative that is IMHO worth looking into is the Rampage from Brunswick, the Ogre Pearl from Visionary, maybe also the G-3 Gryphon. Other balls that would IMO fit your bill are the Bash and Clash from Ebonite and both Thunderstrucks and the T-Road Pearl from Storm. This is a rather conservative choice and surely not complete. There are also balls with stronger cores and  coverstocks, e. g. the Black Widow Pearl from Hammer, but it is hard to make a recommendation without further details about you, and the drilling will also have to be considered.

I probably do throw a little faster than 10mph but I'm not sure. Thanks a lot for all your suggestions.

I'm not sure how to describe my style anymore. I stand towards the middle, then walk straight and throw directly at the second arrow (towards the right) and have it hock to the pocket. With the Doom a lot of the time it hocks a bit to much (past the pocket) and leaves a lot of 10 pins, which is very hard for me to pick up with my hock. Hope that helps

My pro shop guy did a bad job at drilling my first ball so I really don't want to go back to him. So I'm trying to find somewhere else to go.

Start a post here asking for advice on good ball drillers in your area.  

If you are blistering on your thumb, you need to have that checked out by a good proshop.
