Corner Pins are Killin' Me!
« on: May 01, 2004, 07:22:35 AM »
All of a sudden, during the past three weeks or so, I have been leaving lots of 7 pins and 10 pins (more 10s than usual) and even a number of 7-10 splits. (Right Handed) All on pocket hits. Now, I am not saying all the pocket hits were perfect, many were light but I usually carry many of those light mixer hits for strikes. Now lately, so many corner pins stand there and go nyah, nyah, nyah!!

I have moved left, right back and forth, in small increments and nothing changes. Using the same ball(s) in the same centers. Worst thing, I am so freaked out that I am missing about 25% of the corner spares even though I practice them.

Don't know what I have done to cause this increase in corner leaves.

are you coming into the pocket at an extreme angle or a very tight angle?  sometimes even if you are light your angle is so deep and very tight that you leave corners espcially 7-10 splits.  you can try changing lines move left and throw deep, move right and throw tight.  eventually they will fall.

I feel your pain dicnic. I have gottten much better shooting at 10 pins, but shooting anything in the right corner is a horror story for me right now..

Even the slightest change in entry angle can create havoc leaving corner pins.  Try thoroghly cleaning the surface of your equipment to ensure that your stuff is performing as well as it can.  Or, take the surface down a notch to create additional entry angle.  Or, as a last resort, spend an obscene amount of moolah on new equipment.

Hey Dicnic,

Is this the house with carrydown or screaming backends?  Both of these conditions can cause the weak corners to occur.  However, if you've tried moving right, that should've solved the problem on the carrydown cause it should have allowed you to just flush the pocket, unless it's even more carrydown then before.  Try and hit even higher to see if you can trip 4 pins, that'll show you just how much carrydown is really there.

If it's the short oil w/ clean backend shot, this is the harder one that is causing you to play away from the pocket and most likely is entering real late for the corners to stay up.  On this shot, I'd recommend a ball that actually rolls a little sooner so your breakpoint on the lane moves closer and also changes your trajectory as it enters the pocket.  This should help as it won't be as late as you're currently experiencing now.

Ask your mechanic if they've recently done any maintenance to the oiling machine.  When my mechanic changes the squeegee on the oiling machine, it turns our backends into a massive black and white from front to back for about 3 weeks until it gets worn again.  You probably haven't done anything different in your game to cause this much difference unless you hit the exact time that your equipment is fizzling out...hope some of this helps out.

Its also getting to be the time of year that some houses put in new pins.  New wood doesn't always carry the same as the older stuff, and if you depend on a lot of messengers and light mixers, you can sometimes pay a price for a month after the new pins are put in.

Thanks for the replys, folks. This has happened in two houses, both with clean backends, not quite screaming but close. I am an old stroker and in one house where they re-oil 10 to 10 for 38 feet just before league, I play up 7 or 8 to use the oil line as a bumper. Other house is regular THS and I normally play up 10. Go to ball is a Ragin' Red Fuze which by now has perhaps 150 games on it. I clean it with Hook-It after every outing.

By the way, I shot 749 awhile back, in the house that re-oils 10 to 10 before league, using the same ball, which is not bad for a 193 average ol' phart!

No new pins, no current problems with the oil machine as far as I know.

I am assuming that it is simply something I am doing. I left two 7-10 splits in one game last Wednesday, left another last night, plus lots of 7's and 10's. Perhaps a milder ball to change the entry angle.

Thanks again!

Bones said it again, its more than likely a lack of enegry in the pocket. Note the balls path through the pin deck and where it falls off the lane. Then note when the ball stands up (in the midlanes or later). This analisys should provide you the answers you are looking for.
