What pro bowling really needs
« on: January 26, 2020, 10:33:15 AM »
I have been impressed with Fox coverage of tour, and think Bowlero ownership will prove to be more positive than some believe.  However I was watching the golf pre game show, and they were talking about Tiger making 10 million official money on his best year.

Bowling needs prize funds to get to where a dominant player can make 1 million, and the top 50 can be in the 100k territory.  The PBA blew so many opportunities to stay closer to golf in terms of prize funds in the 70s.  Probably not in the cards, but it would sure be nice for the game

Going to leave this here.  Only tangentially related but don't want to start thread for it.  Holding personal opinion to myself.

personally I think the biggest problem is the inability to make what the pros do stand out from the league bowler or occasional house shot bowler.

When ESPN shows me a Tiger woods highlight, there are 2 obvious things I see as a non golfer.  1) how much nicer the course is than the local one I drive by on my way to work and 2) how awesome that shot was and that nobody I know has a even a remote chance of replicating it.

how do you explain to a non bowler that a certain shot was "awesome" or "incredible".  aside from picking up a 7-10 split or a big 4, there isn't that obvious difference between what the pros do on the lanes and what a somewhat serious league bowler is capable of doing on the lanes.

we all can appreciate the big hits in football or the Barry Sanders juke move; what is the bowling equivalent?

The bowling equivalent would be oil. Oil is the great equalizer....however, you can't see it with the naked eye, so unless an announcer is explaining the differences and effects of bowling a sport/pba pattern vs a house shot, a casual non-bowling observer would think the guy he saw practicing next to him on the lanes the other day is the same as the pro bowler.
