I've used clay and plumbers putty as well as the 'regular' dams. I'll stick with the 'regular' dams, thank you. The clay is good, press hard, get a good seat. Plumbers putty is (IMO ) a bit better, again press hard. Both take care when taking the 'dams' off and get as much as you can off before cutting the plug. I use a router and the clay/putty left will make a mess on the blade.
Both are OK, one great thing about either, you can 'mold to fit' what ever you need to. Long thin "cuts" in a ball or sizes that may cause a "regular" dam to go to the larger size, you can "cut to fit" with clay or putty.
