can anyone PALM the ball as well as finger/thumb?
« on: December 10, 2003, 12:33:29 AM »
I went bowling today, I was getting frustrated (I had gotten laid off early in the morning), and I just couldn't find a shot.  I had originally gone to one house, because they have a morning bowling special, but no dice they had a party scheduled.  I had taken my two hookingest balls with me, messenger and wicked, hoping to learn the deep inside seeing as that place is good for that.  Well, no luck, I go to the home center, and the conditions are ICE.  Felt like 50 feet of oil (i know, it wasnt that much).  I got desperate and out of frustration I left the thumb out of the wicked and played coast to coast.  Shot a 200 doing that, then a 146.  So not too consistent, but definitely a tool for versatility someday.  Anyone able to use the palm as a VIABLE alternative when the lanes are ice?

sorry, palming the ball is against abc rules. you must place at least two fingers in the ball.

Odd, I always thought 'palming' was the common sense term for using 2 fingers.  Seriously, how could someone possibly get any revolutions without any fingers in the ball?

seeing as how the ball rests in the palm, thus 'palming' the ball
crikey

I switched to a no thumb this year. I do not average higher this way. I tend to be erratic. Lots of 240+ games mixed with sub 190 games. It is a viable alternative. No thumbing will allow you to hook and carry better. Consistency is tough. If all you want to do is average 200ish with some high games no thumbing is the ticket. If you take the game really seriously and want to reach the highest level of the sport, keep your thumb in the ball.
It's neat to have the most hook in the building, but you usually don't need it to score.

I've been known to try this for my 4 pins, and occasionally my 7 pins. I'm pretty accurate, but my real problem is keeping the ball on the lane. If i'm throwing anything more agressive than my plastic ball it's going to be left of the headpin... anything reactive and it's in the left ditch. Go figure. No revs with my thumb, too many revs without. Too bad I can't figure out a way to palm it at 20 mph.
