If you could start a league.........
« on: March 10, 2004, 04:26:21 PM »
I have an opportunity to try and start a league.  So I
am looking for ideas.  The bowling center owner is going
to cut me a major break on the lineage cost so 80 to 90% of the
bowlers fees will be returned as prize fund.  This would be
a 9:30 pm league any night of the week but thursday.

I am thinking about a doubles scratch 6 games per week.
bowling 1 team the first set and a different team the 2nd set.
The owner is willing to re-oil before we start if we are
willing to wait.  He says he will put down any shot we want.
Since all house leagues are the walled up shot I am thinking
about a flat pattern long oil.  Something that would require
shot making ability and versatility to score well, or maybe one
of the pba patterns that is long oil. I also that 6 games is alot
of games when you start at 9:45 pm.  Finish time would probably be
close to midnight. I realize this league would not be geared
toward your "avg" league bowler.  If something
like this was available in your area would you be interested in it??

If you could start a league what kind would it be and
how would it be run.

Jac,

Your idea sounds alright, though I do echo some of your concerns about finishing time and the like. In my area we have a scratch match-play league similar to what you're talking about. Last year it was 1-on-1, but there are more guys this year, so now you bowl 2 matches at the same time. Three players per pair, each bowling the other two. It's broken into 3 trimesters for the season. The 1st and 2nd place finishers of each trimester qualify for the playoffs, and there are wildcard spots that go to those with the best W-L records among non-winners. It's a cool league. Because of the start time, we only bowl on the second shift house shot, so that kind of sucks. It's still a lot of fun. In the summer we have scratch-match play league that rotates through the different PBA patterns. People seemed to like that one. You have a lot of freedom with this. I would prospect some of the guys you think might be interested to see what they have to say about the whole thing. Good luck to you.

Bowling is without a doubt the dumbest, most pointless, most idiotic excuse for a game that has ever been invented. So, what time are we bowling tomorrow?

I used to bowl a Sunday morning sport bowling league (sanctioned that way and everything).

It was scratch doubles, and we would bowl two games, change pairs, and bowl two more.  Since it was a sport league, not a lot of strikes were thrown, and spare shooting was very important.  It took 3 hours to bowl 4 games since a lot of folks had to throw two shots every frame.

The league folded after one season, because everyone got tired of shooting such low scores, but I loved it.  I never spent so much time with my Pink Hammer, EVER -- especially on the short patterns
