Splitting open a bowling ball to extract the core

I left an old ball on my rack in the garage over the winter and it has since cracked. My goal is to break the ball open so that I can extract the core to keep in the shop as a momento. Its an original Nightmare with a badass looking core that I had shot 300 with first game out of the box. Lifting the ball over my head and smashing it on the ground in the back alley has had zero effect. Any recommendations?

Hammer and chisel, slowly work your way around. Hammer the chisel in, then wedge something next to it, rinse and repeat. Ive tried on every ball that has cracked, only got out 3 or 4 cleanly. I did split one right in half which looks just as cool.

Hammer and chisel seems reasonable. How long did it take you and how cleanly did the core pop out of the shell?

Be prepared to spend some time getting to the core and then cleaning it up so it resembles the trophy your seeking. The cover stock/filler breaks into large pieces using a chisel/hammer,but a lot of the filler still clings to the core. That's the part you have to spend some time on cleaning it up.

Set it on the ground pin up.
3 lb. hammer and punch the pin.
This should loosen up the core from the filler material and cover.

It wont take too long depending on how deep the crack is, and who made it. Anything San Antonio made is practically impossible to get out clean. Only one I ever had luck with was my old triton elite. Ive got a hellraiser, nightmare and reax core that dont have a speck of filler attached to them. I had g3 gryphon crack also, that was same deal as the SA balls.

I have tried to break open a few Roto grips with no luck. Hammer and chisel. Decided I didn't have enough time in my life. I have a nightmare and a mastermind I wouldn't mind trying to bust apart now though.

I've tried the hammer and chisel also, it's amazing how hard that filler is. After hitting it a few times, you wonder how it ever cracked in the first place.
Watch out hitting the coverstock! That stuff can chip and fly off there and it can be sharp! so wear safety glasses!!!
