Do the "300" nerves ever fade???
« on: December 29, 2008, 08:13:14 AM »
I threw my first 300 a couple of weeks ago and wasn't nervous till around the 9th frame and then shaking a little goin into the last 2 balls in the tenth...I'm just wondering if those nerves every fade or go away when you're going for the 300...So anyone out there who has thrown a few feel free to comment...

I'm 54 years old and still looking for my first one.  I've had 3 sanctioned 278/279 and my a** hole puckers every time.  I don't care if it's on a walled up house shot, (which I don't bowl on), or not, it's still good shooting if you throw 12 in a row and I'm sure I'll be nervous every time.  That's if I ever get there.  Congratulations to all those of you who have thrown perfect games and may you enjoy it each time.

I'm 59, just got my 2nd three this Sept. When I got up to shoot the 12th shot I started getting a big grin on my face cause I just knew I was gonna splat 10 in the pit. Never had anything like that happen before. The first 300 I was doing breathing exercises to calm myself down. Shot 3 289's last season, left 2 10's and a 9 in those games, but didn't get nervous. I always figured that once you have one the rest are just icing.

From my experience toward the tenth frame it feels like the ball is lighter and lighter so move a board or 2 right and nut flush.  Its your feet that feel like they are in molasses

For me, no they dont go away... they have lessoned but I have become better at dealing with them. I am never more focused then in the 10th needing strikes and especially with the front 9. I have had 300 games now in 4 decades, 70's,80's,90's,and 00's. Cant wait until 2010 and make it 5 decades.

Very true.  I have 3 300s and 1 299, and I was nervous as hell for each.  I was most nervous about the 299 though-it happened 3 weeks(I was out of town and didn't even bowl) after my last 300.

I hope I continue to get nervous.  The very first time I shoot a 300 or 299 and just say "eh, whatever" I no longer need to even bother going.

I shot 1 sanctioned 300 back in '97 averaging 167 with a previous high game of 241 in league.  I didn't get nervous until the 12th ball, and at that point my legs were such jello that I was just hoping to keep the ball on the lane.  I got lucky and crossed over for the strike, but heck I was 15 lol.

Now I get the front 2 and I get nervous lol.  Most of the time I get the front 9 and put nothing in the ball on #10 and come in way light.  However the last time I had the front 9, I just told myself I didn't have to make a perfect shot, that the lanes were easy and I just had to be close.  I felt more relaxed, and threw what I thought was a good shot.  The lanes didn't agree with me and left a solid 10 pin even though I am left handed.  I felt more relaxed though and now I have an idea of what to do next time.  I still think the problem is even having to think.  I know back when I shot the 300 I wasn't thinking at all, and it worked out.

It's amazing how little pressure there is when your 300 means nothing.  I have 2 practice 300's and both times all three shots in the 10th were perfect, now if I could only figure out how to do that in league....

I do know a guy with over 40 sanctioned 3's and a whole lot of 299's and such, and he says he still to this day gets really nervous and anxious.  Obviously even with the nerves he has figured out how to battle through them to finish the game.

Yes. It is simply a matter of focus and that's true for any "pressure" situation.
