ball and drilling recommendations needed
« on: December 26, 2009, 03:45:38 PM »
HELP!  I'm looking for ball and drill recommendations.  classic stroker aka walter ray. 16mph med speed med revs and (a) game down and in. playing on ths.
So being a lower rev player do i need a strong ball drilled a little longer or a weaker ball drilled for an earlier read? Being rev challenged whats the best combo on a ths to get the ball to have that strong stand up and roll toward the pocket. Assymetrical, symetrical, pin up pin down, solid, pearl, oh my god! maybe Ill go back to two old urethanes one at 600 and one at 2000 like back in the day  that way my brain can get off the ball choice confusion and get back to focusing on the mechanics! any thoughts or recommendations ?

Well first and foremost saying "ths" is being extremely general.  Different houses have different oil volumes/lengths/surfaces/types which make them play very different.

There is no way you can find the perfect answer on these boards because noone knows what you're bowling on.  Getting that precise will require someone with some local knowledge.

Thanks!    Ya I guess what Im getting at is, what do all the classic strokers use as a benchmark/favorite/first love out of their bag. Ths can be as challenging as some sport conditions. Synthetic lanes, plastic balls thrown all day before you. A lane guy hung over while hes laying the oil down. In general what tends to match up with a stroker style? My house just switched to synthetics and I'm not sure theyve figured out how to oil or take care of the lanes yet. I know its a big change from the wood lanes! Thanks all in advance for your comments!!!
Love this forum!  Could browse and read all day long!

the nice thing about todays equipment is drilling and surface you should be able to match up most med heavy to heavy oil balls to your style now if your talking synthetics and if they put any amount of oil down look at something like the full swing probaly give the push in the fron and the recovery in the backend. I have been checking out videos and like the looks of the ball. now the question is what line do you feel most comfortable with the walter ray where he flattens out to stay straight on dryier conditions of maybe more inside now if you wanna play outside and walk into the pocket i would suggest pin above bridge maybe above middle and mb an inch right of thumb and if you wanna swing the ball and have something that will get out there and eat a bit drill the ball pin right of ring or below ring and kick that mb about 2 to three inches right of thumb which will require a weight hole and if you encounter dryer conditions you will probably have to do some surface adjustment maybe a touch of shine or so on to prevent roll out but that is with all equipment makeing it roll right for you.

Without knowing your PAP any layout advise would just be conjecture. The layout suggested above could be very strong or very weak depending on your axis. There are plenty of mid priced balls that work great on house shots. Higher volumes of oil generally are best handled with solids and lighter volumes with pearls. Surface can be adjusted to alter when and how they read the lanes. I would recommend going to your pro shop and discuss what you need with them.

I wasn't trying to rain on your parade, just be honest.  These boards are a great resource, but you have to remember that noone can truly know what you are bowling on or how you bowl.  This makes some advice very hard to give, even for the most knowledgable posters.

I ran a shop for years and would really try to avoid making a ball recommendation before I saw two things:

1 - them throw the ball so I could see their ball roll

2 - some of their favorite pieces so I could see what they like ball motion wise

Without seeing those things all recommendations are a complete guess.

Actually, what you need is a ball designed to handle the volume of oil at your center, drilled to match your release strength.

Without knowing BOTH of these, suggesting a ball is pure conjecture. Here, at our home center, I bowl with a guy that sounds a lot like you. While here, he uses strong, matte finished stuff (Bounty Hunter, Cell pearl @ 1000abralon, Mystic @ 400 grit). Conversely, we went to a tournament where he played the same line and release with a urethane (Natural) and PLASTIC (Maxim).

Look around. What is everyone else there using with success? Strong balls or weak balls? Aggressive drills or mild drills?

Finding out what other successful bowlers are using could be quite helpful.

If there is any one in your center with a similar style see what ball they use. If this does not help you could start with a mid price solid. Something like the Visionary Ogre Solid. The cover stock is easily adjusted to match up with the lane surface. Start with a label leverage drill. I use this to get length (pin up). Have Fun!
