Knee Pain?
« on: February 22, 2007, 02:21:58 AM »
To start off, I'm 22 years old and have an average build.  After about a game and a half, I get this ridiculous pressure feeling behind my left kneecap(I'm right handed).  I have slowed my approach way down to try to get it to stop and was just wondering if anyone else has this problem.  I am pretty active and this is the only time my knee hurts me.  Maybe I need to buy a knee brace for when I bowl?  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

I'm in the same boat as you, after about 2 games I start feeling pain in my knee, it's downhill from there.  I've had this off and on for about 2 years now, some nights better than others, and the soreness afterwards lasts about 3 days.

Braces just seem to move the pain around, instead of in under the cap it moves to on top of the knee or down the leg.  My dad just had surgery on his knee to fix some cartilage problems, so I'm probably in for the same fate eventually.  The only thing that seems to be working is strengthening the knee, and losing some weight.  But even then the pain is there, it's just not as bad.

What are your shoes like? Does your slide need work? Do you plant? Are you square at the line? The only good way to answer these questions is to find a coach or someone knowledgable to see what your approach looks like.

Your shoes and slide are just as important as the balls are. I believe Susie Minshew had an article in BTM about it (This http://www.bowlersparadise.com/articles/coachescorner/susie-minshew/no-feet-no-game.shtml looks like a reprint of it). UJS Bowler has a great quote by Chris Barnes about the importance of shoes and slide also.

If your game is good, then it could be caused by a natural physical problem, from my experiences with myself, it is because of weak muscles in my legs and core and looser than normal patellas. Thanks to my Orthopedics group and their rehab center, I've corrected most of my problems related to knee pain (other than weight... imagine that a chubby bowler).

Good luck.

Good article.  I do have an old pair of shoes that I think that I might need to replace.  Hopefully something will stop my knee from hurting.  Thanks for the replies.

Buy a knee brace. Remember, you are putting a lot of pressure on your left knee when you slide. Age has little to do with it.

Try this it will help take the pressure off your Patella Tendon. It happens when the tendon is pulled off center, which causes pain. You can do excersises to strengthen the inside of your leg also. Just leg raises with an ankle weight would work. You need to get the tendon back centered.

I don't think it's any coincidence that we are seeing more & more of these kind of threads.

I think it's a combination of tennis shoe style bowling shoes & the prominence of the plant & rip it style.

My suggestion, get shoes with an adjustible heel & push that slide out longer.

Im 24, RH. Med build as well. I too have quite a bit of knee pain when I bowl.  I have found that getting a different pair of shoes along with a brace really helps.  And a little icey hot thrown in the mix here and there!  I went and has a MRI, thinking that something was torn because of the amount of pain i was having.  Turns out i just have access joint fluid in my left knee.  So, Im trying to play through that.  They told me to loose a few pounds and strengthen the areas below and above my knee, to help ease the stress on it.

Knees are not built to be pivoted on. So check your approach and make sure that you are not twisting through the shot with your foot planted. This can be a mechanism for tearing a meniscus.

Just FYI, I have been having the same problems and I went to a doctor and that's what they told me too.  Gotta strengthen the upper leg muscles.  The pain started then I started to go for a deeper knee bend.  Turns out I am out of shape.

Thanks for the responses guys.  I guess I'll try several things.  I do need new shoes to start and I might have to try a brace as mentioned and the brace that puts pressure on the patella tendon.  Well, again, thanks for all the responses.

Check with a dr before you try a brace like that.  I saw a sport med dr about my knee pain, and i forgot the exact condition i have but he said a brace like that could actually make it worse.  He suggested a knee brace with the cut out for the knee cap if i really wanted to wear one.

Ditto on the checking with a DR.

I went to my chiropractor and had him look at my knee.  I heard a loud pop sound and the most knee pain I have ever felt.  After the session he told me to quit wearing inexpensive shoes at work andgetting something good with arch support.  Not to say this works for everyone but good daily shoes have made a big difference.
