Newbie question....
« on: September 06, 2004, 03:33:05 AM »
Just gettin into bowling over the past couple weeks and I want to get my own ball now since the balls at the lanes are kinda weird. I started in the 80-90 tange per game but now am over 150 most of the time and got my first 199 last week (coulda been a 201 but I choked in the last frame). I was wondering what kind of ball I should get. The lanes have a speedo and I am usually between 21 and 22 MPH comfortably with little to no hook although I would like to get a ball that will allow me to learn to hook more gradually. I normally use 15 or 16 lb balls depending on which one I can find that the hole placement doesn't suck. Weight is not an issue with the ball at all as I am a pretty big guy and very fit. Thanks for the help!

Hi Spastik,

I would say just about any ball would work out fine for a beginner.  I personally would recommend a bowling ball that doesn't hook very much so that you can actually learn to hook it the right way.  Then later on as you develop, you can try some of the bigger hooking equipment and will be able to hook it as much as you ever need to.

Any of the entry level bowling balls like Roto Grip's Sonic line (Sonic X, Sonic X solid, Sonic Boom, and Super Sonic) would be a good start.  I'm so behind on what's new out there now, but I know every company has an entry level line of bowling balls that usually costs $130 or less, so you should probably start there.

Make sure to get a finger tip grip, and hopefully you can find a few good bowlers to watch and learn how to hook the ball from them.  If you can stay away from the hook-in-a-box type of equipment early, then it should benefit you down the road.

I pretty much agree with michigan bowling about sstarting out with a ball with limeted hook. the sonic series from rot grip I have heard (though never used) has great bang for the bukc and has better carry, hit, etc than the average 3 piece ball (except the flame reactive). Some other bowling balls you may want to consider would be these: Columiba's Super Trooper, Dynothanes Crisis or even Storms Barbed Wire. These balls all have probobly slightly more hook than the sonic line, but still shouldn't be hookmonsters. If you want info and GOOD reviews go here, www.123bowl.com ...
