Thumb Swelling Problem!
« on: March 18, 2012, 06:15:02 PM »
I have been having problems with my thumb swelling a lot after just one game, and continuing to do so til I finish. Im looking for solutions or ways to keep it under control.

I know you will all say switch grips are the way to go, but I would like to make this my last resort as Im out of work and finances are a bit tight.

Thanks

My thumb swells at times too.  My solution is to have my balldriller open the thumbhole out, actually oval it, and then I will put a piece of Magic Carpet on the backside of the thumbhole.  That allows for some swelling/reduction to occur without having to make any other adjustments, but I also will add tape to the front side of the thumbhole if necessary.  That happens if I take the summer off and my thumb shrinks due to loss of callus.

Even if you don't use the Magic Carpet, you can use tape to adjust the fit of the hole better after it is opened up some.  Add/remove tape to maintain the proper size to your thumb.

There are variables that cause swelling the biggest generally is from unnecessary gripping. When you grip an object, it pulls blood to that area for protection, causing the swelling. If the weight is too excessive or the span does not fit properly these can cause gripping.

+1 - swelling is not "normal"...and is a grip issue or squeezing...or both.
