What is the 'customary' way to do a transaction?
« on: November 03, 2007, 01:31:42 PM »
All too often you read about this person or that person ripping someone else off.  I don't read all the posts, so I may not see someone's name that others have warned against.  I have someone right now thinking about purchasing one of my used balls.  If the transaction occurs, I know the other party has nothing to worry about from me.  I know there is no way to really know for sure about someone on these forums or in other Internet transactions (i.e Ebay).  That being said, what is the 'customary' way to execute a transaction?  Does the buyer only accept a bank money order or cashier's check, and does the money have to be received before the purchased item is shipped?  I'm sure the buyer would say they want to see the goods before they pay.  I know it all comes down to what you are comfortable with, but what do some of the other posters do?  I like to believe that people are honest, but in today's world you never know....

Treat people the way they wish to be treated.

Follow through on your promises.

Be forthright when describing your used equipment.

Look twice before crossing.

Those are just a few.  However, these are a pretty decent start.

The seller (you) can accept any form of payment you desire. It's up to the buyer and seller to agree on the form of payment and shipping procedures. It's customary to pay for the item 1st and then it gets shipped. The best transactions are the in person type but those are rare.

Alright, here you go.

1) State all your rules upfront, that is, what you will accept for payment, what you will charge for shipping, and the accurate description of product.

2) THE SELLER ALWAYS WAITS UNTIL THE PAYMENT IS RECIEVED BEFORE SHIPPING... This is vitally important to keep you from getting ripped off. If you ship before payment, you will recieve excuses you couldn't even dream up for why you are not getting paid.

3) Paypal is best. It cost money, but it's insured. So if someone tried to rip you off, you're covered. Also, most buyers feel more secure using Paypal and often times you'll get more money for you're product which will more than cover your paypal fees.

4) Lastly, be cool and never demanding. I have worked with so many people and had all positive experiences. Two quick examples... 1) I once had a women take 11 days to pay me, I normally ask for payment within 7 days, but she contacted me saying that her husband was in the hospital and she needed a few days for the funds. Whatever her reason was, I was patient (Within reason) and recieved payment and positive feedback. 2) I once had a bidder purchase something from me and email claiming he won two auctions of the same item and was wondering if he could get out of his purchase of my product. I made a compromise with him by simply making him cover my listing and auction fees. Once again, negative feedbacks avoided and everyone's happy. Anyway, you can't please everyone but try to find compromise and most important, be honest, and people will continue to buy from you !

Never play leap frog with a unicorn?
Surprised that one didnt make the list.

In all seriousness:
Be honest with ball descriptions.
Sell for market value.
Buying, dont try to get something for nothing.
Ship fast.
Be there to answer questions.
