Average rule
« on: October 16, 2009, 02:20:59 PM »
Ok, I have subbed for a team I used to bowl on and I usually only get to bowl 2 games, well this past week I was able to bowl all 3 so I have 11 games. The rules for this particular league state that you use your yearbook average for the first 12 games. My question is, If I bowl my 12th and 13th game in the same set will my average change in the middle of the set or will it stay the same for the entire night? Currently my average would be approximately 10 pins better so its not a great difference as far as handicap since its based on floor average I'm just curious.

I would think since you are subbing that your average would be established after 3 games on same night and the 12 game would not apply since you are a sub

I believe it's as the rules states. After 12 games you'll re-establish your average even if it's mid set. Though the secy may not see it until the following week.

Hogsharley is probably right.

It would be a good idea to ask the league secretary about this before bowling next time.

It would also be a good idea to mention this to at least your own team captain (if not both team captains) immediately before bowling next time so that expectations are properly set and so that no one ignorantly complains later thinking something was not kosher in scoring land.

I wonder what the center's scoring system would do if you changed your handicap between games?  Would it handle the change gracefully or not I wonder?  Probably not.

I would think it would stay the same for the night.

A bowler uses the same average all games that they start the night with. You don't recalculate after each game.

The same would be true here. You started with your book average so all games that night would be under it.

Then the next week you would start using your current average.

Sorry, but Hogsharley is correct. I bowl with the secretary of our men's league, and this happens every year. You will bowl one more game with your book average, then it changes to the new average. This is a USBC rule, and the computer should have no problem with the adjustment if it's a decent system.
