Bowling in the olympics
« on: February 16, 2010, 04:13:16 PM »
Is anyone else wondering why bowling is not an Olympic sport?

Seems like a pretty good winter sport to me.

I would probably say it would have a better chance in the Summer Olympics.  Dont think it will ever be an olympic sport. Would definately be cool though.

One of the reasons I was told for going to the USBC was to facilitate the possibility of making it an Olympic sport. Because one requirement is a single governing body per nation and we were one of the only with more than one.

If I remember right, it was either 1988 or 1992, I think it was the 88 games where bowling was an exhibition sport or a test sport or whatever they do call it...yes it was the 88 seoul games...guess it never made it on a regular basis.

I think it would be a good idea - no different than curling.

I guess 1 problem would be the equipment.  They would probably have to standardize the balls - maybe something like the DVA Open and just have all competitors use the same ball, or maybe just have a few balls to choose from.

I guess they'd also need to have a few different oil patterns laid out.

Still, would be interesting to see how the different styles matchup - power games of the US versus the spinners of Asia.

Not a big fan of the team concept, but I guess that would be better than nothing.

As long as the lane man can determine who wins and loses it is not going to happen.

The main difference between bowling and curling is that people actually go bowling. If the Olympics have curling, not having bowling makes no sense whatsoever! Don''t get me wrong, I Tivo curling and enjoy watching it. Even wish I had a place to try it here in Sunny California(you can keep your ice fishing though.)

Name one other Olympic sport where a totally screw-up gets the same result as something perfectly executed.

Oh gee, I don't know, but let's start with basketball. Some shots are just plain luck that they go in. Most sports have an element of fortunate chance built in. But over time, the best will always win.

That reminds me... last night, Omri Casspi for the Sacramento Kings tried to intentionally miss a free throw late in a close game (hoping for the rebound), but accidentally made the shot! High comedy.

Oh yea, that's right. I saw that on SportsCenter. If there is a way to loose, my Kings will manage to find it.

So you can miss 5" left/right of the correct trajectory and still make the shot?

yeah. you can miss more than 5 inches and make the shot. first if you miss and hit the front of the rim it can bounce and go in. you don't think the distance from three .middle of the basket to the rim is 5 inches?
