Could of torn some cartilage behind your knee cap or damaged a tendon.  This sounds more like a sports related injury, a little more serious than a normal bowling injury.

my guess is the doc will want to do an arthroscope, so you'll be out for 4-6 weeks at the best.

If he finds any damage in there, you'll be out a lot longer. the way you've described it, it doesn't sound good.

I girlfriend had a similar injury from playing squash (blown cruciate ligament) and had to have a full knee reconstruction, she still struggles with it now sometimes, some 7 years after...

I hope yours isn't as bad, I'll cross my fingers for you dude.

OK... now that everyone has scared that pajesus out of you, I'll let you know what I think it may be.  I had a similar situation happen to me recently and it only took me a few weeks to recover.  If you fell the way im picturing you did, you landed directly onto your kneecap.  Best case scenario you have just a major contusion (bruise) and it should just take some time to heal.  Yes many people automatically think it will be a tear, or break, but the doc should do an X-ray, and if nothing comes up on that, he will let the swelling go down for a day or two.  Then possibly have an MRI done.  He will not and should not open you up until you have had at least 1 MRI done.  For the most part today the number one rule to things like this is fix it using the least intrusive method as possible.

Get to the doc as soon as you can and get it checked out.  I would seriously hate to find out you do have a tear, and think you may have caused further damage from walking on it.

Best of luck,
Troy

I had something similar playing softball 2 years ago.  I was running through 1st base: tore ACL, partial tear MCL (inside of knee), tore medial horn of meniscus (inside, front of knee), and a bone contusion for good measure.  It took 6 weeks before they could do surgery due to the swelling and then they fixed the meniscus tear.  2 months later they did the ACL reconstruction.  After that came 9 months of physical therapy for 9-10 hrs a week.

If you tore the meniscus, you'll be out about 3 months.  If it's a ligament, you're looking at 9 months+.  Make sure you find a very good orthopedic surgeon and do all the PT.  My knee is back to normal after everything.  I've got a brace that I wear for most athletic activities even though I don't have to wear it.  I'd rather not go through that again.

I'm no doctor by any stretch of the imagination, but I've had 2 scopes and a knee replacement on my slide knee in the past 5 years. If you feel a burning, needle piercing pain it is more than likely torn cartlidge. If your knee is swollen as much as you say it could be ligamate damage, much more pain and swelling than cartlige damage. You'd be best to go to an orthopedic specialist, don't dick around with a GP, get to a specialist, PRONTO>.........

The pain level associated with cartlige is minimal swelling and pain level compared to ligament damage. Ligament damage is more tramatic to the area effected, both pain and swelling, generally ligament damage causes the knee to loose structural integrety, more side to side sloppyness, will make it easier to twist the knee and reinjure the damaged area. Hopefully you only have a minor sprain, still best bet is go see a sports specalist, he'llhave a good idea from just looking and feeling the knee what you have done.

great news to hear it's not serious. deffinately a good idea to use the RICE method, has your doc put you on anti-inflamitory drugs?
