Bowling Lanes
« on: October 18, 2008, 12:10:58 AM »
Is there a big difference in bowling lanes. What I mean is this do wood lanes work better for differ bowling balls than say synthetic lanes. The reason I ask this is The place I bowl at Is wood lanes and U could see every track that every ones ball was leaving. But on synthetic U can not see the ball track. So If some one can let me know that would be great.

IMO, big difference in the lanes and the way the ball reacts to them.

Yes, there can be a significant difference between lane surfaces.  New wood, old wood, different brands and models of synthetics, they all play differently given the same oil pattern.

Old wood will typically be extremely high friction, new wood somewhat less.  Synthetics are usually lower friction, but different types of synthetic lanes offer different amounts of friction.  The wear on a particular lane makes a difference as well, and two lanes in different parts of a house can play quite differently.

Wood will absorb oil and over the course of a night, the lanes will tend to dry out.  Synthetics don't absorb oil, so you'll see more carrydown and spotty backends than with wood.

All that's in general.  Specific cases can vary, but that's what's typical.

Wood lanes will also track out your ball while synthetics lanes, given the much smoother surface and no nails in them, will not.

thks. The reason I asked is I bowl on wood lanes and there not new their old wood lanes. I really struggled on the wood lanes. i could not get my buzzbomb to hit the pocket. When I looked at my ball the oil track was across my thumb hole. I can't figure out why that is. so how do U adjust for a would lane. I'm right handed and throw a 15 lb ball and my speed is 16 to 18 mph. thks
