Yes, there can be a significant difference between lane surfaces. New wood, old wood, different brands and models of synthetics, they all play differently given the same oil pattern.
Old wood will typically be extremely high friction, new wood somewhat less. Synthetics are usually lower friction, but different types of synthetic lanes offer different amounts of friction. The wear on a particular lane makes a difference as well, and two lanes in different parts of a house can play quite differently.
Wood will absorb oil and over the course of a night, the lanes will tend to dry out. Synthetics don't absorb oil, so you'll see more carrydown and spotty backends than with wood.
