Bowling leadoff

I just started bowling leadoff in my Thursday mens league and I need a little advice. I have two questions and here they are. First, At the start of the night which team goes first? And second, Should I always wait for our anchor to finish his frame on the opposite lane before I bowl? I've seen it done differently and want to know the proper way.

In all of the leagues in which I've bowled, it's been "ready bowl;"  whoever is ready first goes first.  However, you might want to ask your league secretary whether there is some accepted convention for this in your league.

When I was in Juniors, our coaches told us that we should wait for the anchor bowler to throw their first ball before starting the next frame, and whenever I was a leadoff bowler, I always did this.  However, when I turned adult, the proprietor told me that I should bowl whenever it was my turn, irrespective of whether our anchor had bowled the previous frame.  The reasoning for this was that it would speed up play, and thus get our league off the floor sooner.

I have been bowling leadoff for quite some time and I usually wait for the anchor to bowl the first ball if there are no vacancies or absent bowlers on either team.  If one team is short a bowler, then I modify to accomodate and keep a consistent pace for all.  

I hate to be up on both pairs at the same time, then have to wait while they bowl 2 frames.

I was taught that the bowler on the right has the right of way, so in the first frame I always start first, if I'm on the even numbered lane, or wait the the even numbered lane to start, IF THEY ARE READY.

As to waiting for the anchor, that is, in my humble opinion, a bunch of hogwash and slows the game down, a lot.  You bowl when it's your turn.  The exception is if things are out of sync because Doug is in the bar and you are in danger of having a bowler up on both lanes at once - then you wait to get back in sync.  But if everyone bowls when it's their turn you will rarely be far out of sync, and you'll get done 15 or 20 minutes earlier.

I lead off on my scratch team.

Regardless of which lane I’m starting on, if I’m ready and the opponent is not I go ahead and throw. If we are both ready I’ll give the bowler on the right the right of way unless they have lane courtesy problems. In other words let’s get started as quickly as possible.

I’ll generally bowl if we are out of sync some. If we are more than 2 bowlers out I’ll tend to drag my feet a little and wait for a ball to be thrown. More than likely in a frame or two you’re back in sync.

The rule use to be when bowling unopposed that your lead off couldn’t throw until your anchor had thrown their first ball. But that rule has been removed and you can bowl as fast as you want.

i have bowled anchor and leadoff a lot

starting night-never really cared, but

as brian said

i think anchor should throw first ball before leadoff does
