Bowling Leftie due to injury?
« on: October 31, 2004, 07:41:11 AM »
May be I am trying to hard but here is the story.
I recently fell directly on my right shoulder. It looks like no less than 6 weeks recovery. I tried bowling and made the injury worse. I can not back-swing at all.
My team is 3 man and we are in first place. I am the anchor with 185 -190 average. We have a small church league with no available subs.
Has any one made a successful transition to left hand with an injury?
I just would like to be consistent as we are a handicap league.
Can I ask for a new average determination?
Any history or feedback would be appreciated.
Serious replies please!

You HAVE to establish a left handed average. Also, once your shoulder DOES heal,if it is still this year, then before you bowl every week you must tell the opposing team captain which arm you are going to use in order to use the correct average for handicap determination.
This rule was established in order to prevent sandbagging----and I am NOT accusing you of this. I have seen that happen in the 80's so that 200 plus bowlers could build up handicap before tournaments.
Good luck and I hope your shoulder heals........

You say a SMALL CHURCH LEAGUE but you don't say if it is SANCTIONED or not! If it is SANCTIONED I have a suspicion that you might have to be SANCTIONED twice .. once lefty and once righty! I do not know this as FACT .. but it seems that would be required to HONESTLY track your PROPER average! Others might tell you more on this!

I do know two different individuals that were right handed bowlers who did damage to there bowling side and had to convert to SOUTHPAW! Both of them did EXCELLENT after a while! In fact one of the two was better from the LEFT side!

I just went through this same scenario in my league. Being the secretary, I had to respond to a request for rules clarification.

ABC rules state that you may switch hands if you are injured. You must have the league's permission to do so. You will have to establish a new average but you are not required to sanction again.

You are not allowed to switch back and forth from left to right. The rules state that a right handed bowler must always bowl right handed and the same for a left handed bowler.

Bowl left handed until your shoulder is fully recovered and then again get permission to go back to your preferred hand.

Thanks for your help everyone.
I just met with my local pro and he has a lefty drilled ball close to my specs. I will practice this week and see what happens.
