i recently changed my span on a decent amount of balls i have. i noticed that i'm spinning the ball more as opposed to coming up the back of it. is there a reason why this is happening or is it a matter of getting used to the shorter span

What could be happening is that this shorter span is causing you to grab the ball on the down swing to make sure you dont drop the ball. By doing this you could be turning it early. I would have someone watch you to see what the problem is. How short did you go from your other grip and why did you shorten are two main questions I would ask.

I believe I went from 4 1/2 to 4 1/4. Mostly because of pain in my ring finger. Pitch in fingers is now -1/4 and with power lifts going +1/4, Figners feel even now as opposed to 0 holes and +1/4 grips. Thumb is also bigger now because I never had my thumb fully in the ball due to the span (I got used to the longer span and my hand always felt fine). The past couples months it has really been hurting and I believe it is due to the span taking a toll on my hand. Shorter span feels so much better now. andNow I feel like I am actually hitting the ball instead of spinning it. I've been working the past couple days on staying behind the ball while subbing in leagues and shot 740 last night aftr I was able to get comfortable.

Sounds to me as if you do not get the thumb out of the ball cleanly, as if you'd press with both fingertips and the thumb to hold onto the ball for too long, which makes a clean exit difficult and makes youz hang onto the ball for too long.
From the belly I'd suggest to try experimenting with tape - if the the thumb hole is bigger now, this might be the main reason, and not the span change itself? Hard to tell, though.

My thumb was small before because I never put my whole thumb in the ball. I''m using a 3 sixe thumb hole 29/32, 30/32 (15/16), 31/32 because of my thumb shape. Thumb fits great now. I guess with the shorter span I hit the ball different. I think with my old span I was grabbing too much to try to hold onto the ball

May also try tightening thumb hole so that you can relax thumb more. Trust that the ball will come off.

Oh dont get me wrong, my breakpoint shape has increased and I feel that I am getting greater length. it just seems that the axis I am hitting now looking like its spinning as opposed tothe axis I was used to seeing the ball rotate on. It was just an observation I noticed and was curious as to why it appears that way.

With the shorter span you may have decreased grip pressure allowing you the "get around the ball" more easily creating more "skid" in the front and causing more "hook" in the back.

A shorter span tends to create the ability to get around the ball easier and a longer span tends to allow you to roll it easier.
Staying behind the ball means keeping the inside of your elbow pointing at your target and your wrist rotating around the ball.
As stated before....staying behind the ball, along with hook are the 2 most misused words in bowling....
