Bowling Lexical Dictionary
« on: January 19, 2004, 06:47:00 PM »
34 years of age, and I have been sent back to college.  My teaching licensure needs to be upgraded to more completely cover the subject I am teaching.  I am licensed to teach English, but my jub is teaching English to immigrant students, hence the grammar/linguistic-intensive classes.

Here's my little school project:

In talking about the varying elements of language, we have looked into jargons (the specified speech that goes on within a subculture).  As bowlers, we have our own specific jargon.  If we were talking about fried heads and flying backends, we would be completely comfortable doing so, whereas a complete outsider would be totally lost.

I want to compile as complete a list as possible of the various bowling terms and phrases we use on a regular basis.  So, list them below.  I have a fairly long list in my head that needs to be put into written form, but my list is by no means complete.  Different parts of the country/world have different words/phrases for different things.  I look to the diversity of this group to compile as complete a list as possible.

Thanks for your contributions.

First off, there are all the ways we describe the pins left on the deck when you don't strike:

Washout
Picket Fence
Greek Church
Double Pinochle ("big 4", blah...)
The Bucket
Bedposts
Baby Split
Ringing 10
Weak 10
Solid 8/9

Then there's where/how you hit the pins:

Brooklyn (if you live in Brooklyn, it's called a Jersey)
Flush
High Flush
Light Mixer
Through The Nose
Nosejob
Trip 4/6

Technical terms:

Flare
Axis Migration
PAP
NAP
VAL
CG
Max Leverage
Stacked Leverage
Label Leverage
Loopy Leverage sorry
x-y" Pin
Pin to PAP
Swing the CG Out
Pin In
Pin Out

Misc:

Wood
Dead Wood
Carry
Wall Shot
Down and In
Up the Boards

I'll try to think of some more later...

When I get a few minutes, some of you are going to get PM's asking for definitions.  I've been bowling for quite a few years and some of you have me stumped.

Thanks for the input!

LOL.....jub = Just under broke

The best term/jargon in bowling that I have heard is simply put......"F'n Lefties"

Trust me, I hear it at least 5 times a night (usually the 5 times I throw a swisher strike).
