Only bowlers in the settee area. No spouses, significant others, parents, or children. Coaches are ok during a jr. league.

Heck - when I'm in a bowling center but not bowling, I won't go into the settee area. I wait back on the concourse to speak to the people I go to see...

My son was in a bowling alley the day after he was born, as was I. It is in our genes. I have never been distracted by children in bowling center, there have been times I have feared for their safety when mom and dad let them run around on the approached during open play. Children are the future of our sport, as long as they are under control (as they should be in any public setting) I have no problems with them what so ever. I am sorry if your league night is too important for family.

I remember going to the bowling alley when I was young to watch my mom bowl in a ladies league (mid 70's), but I don't remember being like the kids are now. I stayed in my seat or if my mom had the money, she would give me some quarters so I could play pinball. I didn't run around and I definately didn't go anywhere near the settee area or I would get my rearend blistered. Just today, I'm at the bowling alley watching a friend and his wife bowl in a league. Two lanes down a couple of families are open bowling with 4-6 kids ranging from say 4 years to 12 years old. No problem, right? The kids are trying to find a bowling ball to use and one of them decides to go check out the balls that are on the return where my friends are bowling. The kids walk right up with bowlers on the approach and start messing with the balls. My buddy is on the approach when this happens and he yanks a shot when he thinks that one of the kids stepped up on the approach behind him during his approach. Why should my friends have to put up with this? By the way, my friends brought their 14 year old son and he wasn't allowed down in the settee area either.

Small children are only O.K. as long as they are kept away from the settee and approach area, and they should stay calm/quiet.
Between the players, the injury danger is very high. I had the case while training between open bowlers that a 3 year old child ran onto my approach from behind just as I had the ball in full backswing... luckily I did not hit the critter with the ball!

As seriously as I take my bowling, kids don't bother me at the lanes as long as they are not down in the pit. Any type of noise at the lanes is OK with me. It's a mental thing...I can tune everything out. As far as kids go, my only concern is spills.

I spent many a night sleeping at the bowling alley as a newborn. My Dad bowled the late shift on Friday nights and Mom was always there to watch. That's how bowling got in my blood, and my kids are the same way. I was taught at an early age to act appropriately in public, and the same goes for my boys. I can now take them to the lanes and have no worries about them running around and carrying on. They know better. When they have kids, I know they will pass bowling (and appropriate behavior) on to them. It all comes down to parenting and common sense.

Try bowling in a tournament when one of the participants has his two teenage boys (close to 18 yrs old) sitting there at one of the tables playing text message and games on their noisy cell phones. I ended up having to get the TD and he was scared to even go up to the guy to ask them to move out of the settee area because the center was in a less than desirable area of town.

Common sense and courtesy have all but disappeared from many people today. They are too self-centered and disrespectful unless it gets them somewhere and then they follow you around like you are dropping hundred dollar bills.

Glad you all weren't my parents growing up. I used to go to leagues with my Dad and sit at the scorers table or setee area from the time I was a little spud. If you are taught the right way the age releavance is minimal. I used to just sit and watch or keep score with my Dad and ask questions. Gotta tell you that reading this post many of you are way too rectally tight. There is a big difference in the idiot parents that let there kids run around everywhere or the ones who are attempting to teach there kids the game from an early age. I have three toddlers now (2yrs old) I would bring probably one to tournaments if I were bowling anymore. He watchs bowling intently on TV and when we go as a family.  The other two aren't as quiet.

So sit with them on the concourse and teach them about the game.
