Melting down, what do you do?
« on: November 29, 2011, 03:50:02 AM »
Hello all,

I had the Meltdown night last night, totally on me, Didn't throw bad first shots but my timing on my spares was just terrible, feet were way to fast and I never was able to get them to slow down enough to get comfortable with spare shooting. As a Result a lot of bad games were shot by me last night.

Anyway I was wondering how others deal with the Meltdown night where nothing goes right and no matter what you seem to try it doesn't help either. We all have them even pros have them so how do you handle it?

As for me, The first couple of games I still worked hard at trying to put up scores, after the second game of missing a lot of easy spares, sat behind everyone grumbled to myself for a few minutes then just had a good time the rest of the night got a laugh out of bowling terrible and worked on fixing my timing on second shot in the process, we were on PBA Shark and I actually experimented with throwing a Urethane ball hard and straight up the boards at the head pin lol. So as a rule when I am having the awful nights I try to make them fun somehow even if it is at my expense.

Accept it.

We're human beings and we ALL have bad days, especially on PBA patterns and difficult sport shots moreso than on the THS.  For me, it usually comes down to focus, but for the nights where timing feels "off" all night, just try and keep yourself "in play" and make spares.  If you aren't making spares, my only advice would be put yourself in good positions with single spares and well............make them.

With your ball speed and the lentgh of pattern I can understand your troubles.

Plus I know your taste in music.

There isn't any slow and softness to bring it back under 20mph.

Then on top of that look at the center you where bowling at.

That surface has some issues all the way around.

Overall its a bad combo.

Under those conditions or any conditions really try and watch the people around you that are hitting the pocket and make most of their spares.

See what they are doing that is so much different than you.

Then try and tone down what you are doing to get closer to their ball speed and maybe your ball reaction will improve some.

 Rec Lanes........Mike?

My advice is go to the bar with your buddies and have a shot of Goldschlager that will slow you down.

Mike will buy!     Or put it on 230 n up's bar tab I am sure he has one there.  lol

Nope.... Not the Rec.

Superbowl in Appleton.

Mainzer wouldn't like the Shark pattern at the Rec either.

That house has way too much character for a pattern like that.

LMAO

Scott,

Jerry is a character all right.

Don't think you have met Mainzer yet.

Young guy with lots of ball speed to spare.

I find him entertaining most of the time.

Just had one of those nights a week ago. Fought it and Fought it, finally had a couple of shots, Knee started hurting and it slowed me down, shot 216 the last game. I know it wasn't a great game but it was allot better than my first two games.

I was playing way inside about the same place on the lane as VolHard was. I was using the Critical Theory and actually had no issues getting the ball back to the pocket unless I pitched it. I was only throwing it like 16 MPH with a ton of hand. I throw enough strikes, Got a few brookies to fall even. That wasn't the issue.

My problems came from poor spare shooting, kinda sucks cause I have worked hard on that part of my game the last few seasons and have gotten better at it, haven't had night spare shooting like that in a long long time:(

I agree with you about the surface though it is awful. We had Scorpion the four weeks previous to monday and it played different each week.

Thanks for the advice though I appreciate it!

How is T&O This season, I can't ask Tim because he never bowls with you...even though he is on your team lol.

Tim will bowl this week because he only seems to bowl once a month.

You shouldn't amp up your ball speed to shoot spares.

But you seem to do that on a consistent basis.

Try to use the same tempo as your 1st shot on your 2nd shot.

I realize this is a sort of private conversation, but I think a lot of people get too caught up in the results of bowling and not the execution.  As long as the execution is achieved, then all that is needed is to change the approach to make your spares.

But it seems from your posts it is a form issue with your spares.  I assume you have a spare ball, or at least a hard urethane.  You can practice your approach to spares at any time, sport shot or not, if you have a spare ball.

Spm,

It isn't really a closed discussion.

Mainzer sometimes uses a spare ball that I have seen.

Not sure of his spare shooting system.

The one house that I have seem him bowl on a regular basis has above ground ball returns and flat out hooks outside of 12 board.

So most spare systems have a tendency to get thrown out the window there.

Because they just never seem to work on a consistent basis there.

It would benefit him to find a solid coach and take some individual lessons.

Not sure if he had talked to Steve Richter or not.

I have not talked with Richter yet. Though if I see him in Chilton next Saturday I might ask him for a some help, my spare game as improved immensly in the last couple of seasons though, as stated I have worked hard at it. And my scores have improved. SPM I went out today and worked on timing and improved things were much better. Still have a night every once in awhile that is god awful though.

I do use a spare ball,  a urethane Sting Ray, I throw hard and straight at it unless their is a sleeper in which case I will hook it

Overall I am working to improve every time I get on the lanes I bowl pbax leagues whenever avaible. And enjoy the challenge of tougher patterns the ths is boring.
