Lost an insert last night...and bowled better afterwards.
« on: November 24, 2010, 07:30:48 AM »
I lost the middle finger insert out of a new ball last night during league. Saw it come out as the ball hit the pins, and then the insert roll off into the pit. So we called to the back, but they couldn''t find it anywhere.

Now I had a choice -- either bowl the rest of the game with the spare ball, or figure out a way to bowl with the insert-less ball for two games.

Well, I did better than just figure out how to bowl with it: I went 70 pins over my average for the last two games. I bowl with a golf glove, so I didn''t have a problem with comfort. The way I made do with the situation was by pulling my middle finger out of the ball a bit, and just having the pad of the finger inside the lip of the hole. As long as I didn''t grab it, I was OK.

Now I''m wondering whether I should replace the insert or not...lol.

You use a golf glove AND inserts?

Yeah. The golf glove isn't really to keep my fingers from tearing up (although it helps). I use it because the top of my hand sweats a lot (my palms do not, however) and the moisture sometimes will transfer to the grip-side of my hand, which causes slip/stick issues. The golf glove is a way to wick away the moisture. Plus, it's more cost-effective to buy golf gloves in bulk off eBay than it is to replace bowling gloves.

I never considered that. Sounds like an idea to try.

Can't hurt. Get a glove that is full Cabretta leather (the ones that aren't 100 percent leather are some kind of overlay over cloth, and once the overlay tears up, the cloth underneath is much too slick). Cut the thumb out of it, and you're good to go.

Get the tightest glove you can find. I wear a size smaller for bowling than I do for golf. I typically wear a men's large for golf, or a men's large cadet depending on the manufacturer. For bowling, it's either a men's medium, or a men's large cadet.

Why didnt you just buy a new insert ?????? Nothing in the rules that says you couldn't put a new on in. And besides your not altering the surface. Just curious as to why you didn't get a new one.

Did you notice a difference in ball roll/reaction?  The insert adds approx 1/8" from the cut measurement to the actual span.  You may think about dropping the span on that finger an 1/8.

Our local shop is a Vise shop. I use Turbo 2-n-1 grips. I didn't have a spare with me, but I did at home. I didn't feel like paying $6-$10 for an insert that I'd just be tearing out once I got home.

I noticed that I got a little more axis rotation on the ball without the insert. Not much, but enough to be noticeable. What I really noticed was how the grip pressures changed. I use a pinky finger hole, so I've got the thumb plus three fingers in the ball anyway. Having the shorter middle finger almost made it feel like I was bowling with an old two-finger (thumb and middle) grip. The ring and pinky fingers were just there for support, while I was imparting all my adjustments with one finger.

Sort of a strange feeling, not necessarily bad. What I've got to watch is whether it creates any additional strain on my wrist, as my right wrist is already shredded cheese as it is. I think I'm just going to pop another insert in there and go.
