Where did you get your style?
« on: May 26, 2007, 10:15:43 AM »
Frank's video made me wonder.

How did you acquire your bowling style?

I watched guys on TV like Brian Voss, Parker Bohn, Earl Anthony, etc. My Dad threw the ball like these guys, and he was my coach in the early days. I had "timing" drilled into my head over and over from a very young age. I was taught to walk in a straight line. I was taught to have a straight armswing. Everything else was able to be added as I improved along the way. I am still learning, and will continiue to do so until I cannot throw the ball any more.

For you guys with outlandish bowling styles...where did it come from?

I hope this does not come off as a negative topic. It is not my intent to sound as though I am talking down to anyone. I am just curious where unconventional styles are picked up.

Hours of coaching, and hours of watching tape of myself.
Fixing all the quirks I can, then re-taping again.
Keeping everything in line, timed perfectly, balanced and simple as well.
Its like chipping away at a stone sculpture, there is always work to be done.

Basically, I got my style from a friend of mine.  We both started bowling together at the age of 16 or so, and he naturally had such a smooth motion that I started to try and do what he was doing.  That and the fact that his dad could find something that Earl Anthony was doing wrong and tell them how to correct it also helped me.

When I was younger I basically was out of control with the revolutions and couldn't tone it down. I would start off in league playing 5th arrow when other guys were having no problems playing around the track area and I realized that my game needed major help.

I took a few years off from bowling when I was in college and now I feel like I'm bowling better than ever. I am becoming more educated and my focus has shifted to being a more versatile bowler and focus on the mechanics of bowling. I had several coaches as a youth bowler, but I guess my girlfriend is my best coach right now because sometimes when she's bored she will record me on her camera phone. Not exactly the best technology in terms of studying your own game, but it's efficient enough. Most the major changes to my game have resulted from reading on forums and message boards and almost every post I read on this forum I feel like I am becoming a better bowler. Whether it be learning about equipment or how other bowlers are handling certain lane conditions. My game sort of resembles Tim Mack but I don't get quite as much hand and I'm certainly not as good.

In my early days i bowled in a Learn To Bowl / Have A Bowl where coaches "tried" to teach bowling. Later on when i got into bowling seriously, my boss at the pro shop, watching PBA, and practice got me to where i am today.

People always said I was a natural. Back when I was in the pee-wees, I just naturally had the motions of throwing a hook. I remember I used to just throw a 8lb house ball down the left and my ball hooked in. A couple of the other kids' parents called me the "kid with the big hook".

Basically, I've always had my style, it's just that there have been a couple of coaches that have molded me from my raw form. Now I look at video of myself, and besides the fact that I don't get the ball straight back (I wrap it behind my back a little bit), I think I'm throwing the ball great.

Just over 2 years ago I had a strange style.  When I started working with Juan, he asked me about the balance arm being up and forward, pointing to the ceiling in front of me.  I couldn't answer.  It ends up my pushaway was to far forward and the arm was there for balance as I 'chased' the ball.

My current style, more textbook, if there is such a style, is the result of an awesome coach, many lessons some with video analysis, tons of frustration and working through it, and, I dare say, thousnads of games of league and practice.  I also have to credit my supportive non-coach coaches who have helped reinforce what my coach is working with me on and supportive teammates and friends.

I sort of copied my style from Brenda Norman.

Originally from my mom and junior coaches. They really pushed the non cranker style. Always told to emulate Nelson Burton Jr. back in the day

Modified more recently to slow things down a bit.

I do throw harder than most and have decent hand but not the hand of god. I just started devoloping on my own what I felt the most comfortable doing on the lanes eventually I got videotaped and it was power from start to finish. I have tried to emulate Robert Smith since I first seen him when I was a Sophmore in high school I took alot of things from his form and style (except the backswing) it helped me tremendously watching him. Before Maximum Bob though when I first strarted bowling at age 5 my Dad was my teacher and he taught me a different style like Earl Anthony nice and easy, I have learned to change from one to the other as the lane conditions dictate.

Sorry if that was off topic.

My style looks like a pile of steaming crap atm. But bowlers that have influenced me is Barnes, WRW and Duke.

Uh, for 50 cent from ebay...?

No, seriously, when I started bowling with house balls I did what felt natural, and when I got my first fingertip ball it was pretty much the same. 3 step approach, much too hurried, fast feet, no revs, argh!

Then, I was lucky nto fall into the hands of my club's yout trainer, who was in pain when he saw me playing. I did not have frequent coaching, but every now and then on Friday evenings some basic corrections and drill were made, e. g. slower feet, a 4 and finally the 5 step approach (never got the 4 step timing right).

I also got some help from my ball driller, who did a very good job on my entry level equipment at that time and who helped me every now and then with some ideas to improve overall performance, also in style. Additionally, I had help from very good bowlers through comments and suggestions - some things proved to be very fruitful.

And, finally, I read a lot of training books, and BRcom has also been a great source. O.K., it is just theory - but I like this background in order to know what I have been doing, and/or my equipment.

Well, one never stops learning, and I am curious how far I can develop my bowling. I am happy that I made constant progress, and that I was able to pinpoint things that hampered my progress, overcoming them and reaching "new levels" every 6 months or so.

So, O.K., a 180 average bowler might not be too impressive, but I am proud of my achievements in relatively short time, and I know that I am able to perform on this level anywhere, not just in my club house.

Sam Maccarone. I only wish that I was as smooth as he is. We grew up together. I averaged in the high 170's until he came back from his first year on tour. Then, with his instruction I went to the mid 190's. That was 30 years ago. Thanks Sam.
