For me, wood lanes always had a little more overall grab, and they transition a lot different.  My first four years in league were on wood.  Instead of the oil getting pushed around on the wood, it has more of a tendency to soak in or dry up.  I found I had to make bigger moves more often to maintain a good line to the pocket.

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

When you bowl on wood lanes, the track area will affect the way you play the lanes alot. If the track area on the lanes is more in the area of inside 12 then there may be a slight OB outside 12. If the track area is normaly 12 and out more to the gutter, then you may not get a ball to react well inside. The oil on a wood lane also reacts differrant. Depending on the oil it can eather carrydown real fast and bad or it can breakdown, and you will be chasing the oilzone all day. I normaly only bowl on wood lanes so this is some of the things i see.

We bowled in a house with wood lanes for the PA State Bowling Championships and I can't say it was a pleasurable experience.  It will depend on the condition of the wood...the heads in the house we bowled at were awful, and the ball would "bounce" three or five boards one way or the other when you seemingly placed it down on the lanes.  The shot also broke down very fast and I ended up hooking my plastic ball...which I played down and in and it was working, but the carry was just not the same as my reactive gear.
