Title: Bowling over Heavy Oil

I have a hammer blade and i love the ball but my league conditions in the summer have very heavy oil and id like to get it to move a little more cause im used to drier conditions. Ive heard about dulling the ball but how do i do it, would it help and does it harm the ball if in the fall i wanna go back to the original finish. Thanks

The Blade is a nice mid range reactive.  You can get it to handle more oil by sanding it, but don't expect miracles.  The only downside is that if they lighten the oil pattern, your dull ball will hook early, and then roll out.  You can change the cover back and forth many times, as long as it's done well.  If you want to take it down to 400 or 600 grit, take it to the proshop, or to a friend with a ball spinner, provided he knows what he's doing.  You must sand all 6 sides of a ball (left, right, top, bottom, front, back) to make it even.  You can lightly scuff the surface by hand, but don't attempt to really change the surface without a spinner.

Strider makes excellent points about being careful without a ball spinner to change the surface of the ball, but done right it doesn't hurt the ball.

You could also try slowing your speed and moving your feet to change your line a little bit.  But you'll have to experiment and it might take a lot of time on league night to figure out just where and how fast to throw so sanding your ball might be more of what you're looking for.

Whenever I go out to bowl for fun (not in a league) at a certain alley, they have so much oil down to protect the lanes that it's hard to adjust initially.  But I think moving to the right (for a right-hander) and slowing down your ball speed will help you out, especially if you wipe the oil off your ball every time it comes back.  This will help you burn a line in the oil pattern where you want to throw your ball.

Sanding without a spinner is OK too!

If one side gets a little flatter this only serves to slow the ball down a little as it hops rolls, hops rolls hops rolls down the lane.

Don't worry about getting so technical!
