Bowling pissed, does it help or hurt you?
« on: November 17, 2005, 10:24:03 PM »
I always hear people say to "shake it off" or "keep your head in the game."  To me though, I think I bowl better when I'm absolutely livid.  There's two kinds of pissed though, there's "I'm not gonna take this anymore" pissed and then there's "I give up" pissed.  Last night, I'm having the same old problems.  Can't get the ball off my hand, then when I can, I dump it or don't put anything on it, I'm killing it at the bottom, can't project it, or when I think I figure something out, there's always some other little thing I screw up.  I tugged, dumped, fluffed, killed, etc., my way to a 224 and a 227 the first two games.  All the while I'm still thinking about what I need to do.  Strike first frame, then enter the second.  I get up, set myself, and start my approach.  Two and a half steps in, I notice a small piece of a leaf on the approach.  By this time, my arm is already on the way back down (4 step approach), and wouldn't you know it, I step right on the freakin leaf.  Missed inside, hit flat, left a 10.  Kicked most of the crumbled leaf out of the way.  Same thing happened on the spare, didn't quite get rid of all the leaf, and ditched the spare shot.  I was livid.  Had two clean games, and I NEVER miss 10 pins.  I don't mean I miss a few now and then, I mean I don't miss them.  I think I've missed 3 this year bowling 4 nights a week, and both the other ones I either stuck or slid too much.

Get the next two strikes, both were average shots, didn't really like either of them.  Still thinking.  Still can't project, now I was flapping my wrist, turning my shoulders to the left, my armswing was too far away from my body, twisting my wrist in my backswing, just all kinds of things.  Well, I was trying to get the ball into the lane early and roll it.  Not my game, never been my game.  Nearly everyone has a little loft.  Since I was grabbing the ball at release, I thought it would help to try and get my thumb out earlier.  Nope.  Well, I was dumping it and it wasn't rolling back up when I was doing that, so my shoulders were turning and my armswing was getting worse to try and make up for it.  Shoulders and armswing were the biggest problems, but I needed to get around the ball without twisting my wrist or flapping it.  Relaxed it just a tad, and worked with the loft.  Even with using the loft, I still cut it back, my armswing was tighter, I kept my shoulders in line, I didn't twist my wrist, and when I got to the release, wouldn't you know it I threw the ball exactly the way I wanted to.  The ball wasn't quite WHERE I wanted it, but it rolled really well and I carried a mixer.  It was the last thing I needed to correct, and I can't believe I figured it out.  I was literally about to switch hands for the rest of the year, I'd just come from practicing a bit lefthanded before league.  Clean shot after clean shot after clean shot, struck through the first shot in the 10th.  Caught a little too much oil the 11th and left a 4-5 (lol) for 255 and a 706.

So after missing the 10, the anger got me on track.  It helped me concentrate on not screwing up again.  So I guess all I have to do is insult myself and find something to piss me off before I bowl, lol.  So through this longwinded post, does anger help or hurt you?

Unless your target is right at the foul line, you should never have seen that leaf.  It's hard to say someone shooting 700+ is having a problem, but in your set up put your focus on your target and don't take your eyes off it until after the ball has rolled past it.  --  JohnP

The fact that he shot 700+ does not mean that he isnt having problems. There are differences in how well one throws the ball versus how well one can score. I am not particularly happy of a good score if I sprayed the lanes for 12 frames.

As for the whole thing with being mad, aggravated, livid or upset. I need to calm down and relax before I throw the next shot. If I am angry, I tend to throw the ball too hard and become very inaccurate.

I also hate it when people tell me to calm down. I sit there like, no sh*t, tell me the obvious. Like I dont know that I need to calm down.

I like match play leagues the other bowler goes on a string rubs it in your face some, it makes me step up and execute. My younger teamate who i lineup and tell him what ball too use was up on me just last week. He started chattering i am ahead of you by 11 in the 6 th frame, well i went sheet for 244 and he opened a couple of frames for a 197. I just looked at him laughed and said Luke the force is not with you messing with his head, i ended up shooting 674  and he was under 600.  Sometimes you have to put the young bowling studs in there place, he has much more game than me but i decided to put it too him from his comments.

I like to feel like a younger still rough version of you.
Long way to go by the way!

this 1 kid and i absolutley hate each other it goes back to when i called him out for cheating (stomping on the foul line when he leaves a split to have a chance at the spare) so when we meet in a tourney match play or league it's on i become another person running out shots yelling and getting fired up and he has yet to beat me in match play 10-0 baby

Yes, I look at the foul line.  I kinda follow the approach up to the line with my eyes.  Actually, I look at my feet, start walking, glance up at the pins, and then focus on the line.  If I don't look at the line, I grab the ball even worse at my release.

Don't dis me or you're in for a long night.

A few years ago, I was bowling in a summer tough shot league. 2 games, switch lanes, 2 games against another opponent. I stunk the entire summer, just could not throw the ball right. On this particular night, I threw more garbage the first two games, and we switched lanes. As we're putting our gear on the rack, my opponent looks at me and says, "well, this will be an easy 6 points". I didn't say anything but I was hot.

To abbreviate, I got so focused on beating this jerk that I shot 470 for the two games, and blew him away by 80 pins. And when we done, and he was moaning and grumbling, I said "You were right. It was easy."

One of the more satisfying nights in my bowling career.

Anger is intense energy.  Using that energy to increase our focus seems to work for most of us.  Saw a PBA show where Jason Couch made a verbal jab at Brad Angelo. Brads' jaw seemed to tighten and he went on to win the 1st round match.  In my own world a fellow made a comment to me about how I almost looked like a bowler.  I threw the next 6 in a row, filled all of my frames, and took the match.

If I get angry at the way I'm executing, I'll walk back to the concourse and "disconnect" for a bit. Helps me get back into focus.

If someone tries to get in my head, I learned a long time ago that the best way to deal with that is to picture their head popping out between the 1 and 3 pins (kinda like bones) - I seldom miss the pocket at that point.

going up on the lanes when I'm angry is ALWAYS counter productive.

I love it, however, when an opponent is angry because of the way they're executing, or angry because I carried a lucky strike. their anger almost always guarantees ME the match.

Of course, my on the lane conduct shouldn't ever give anyone a reason to get mad. My bowling, however - they can get as mad as they want. I hope I have them raving and talking to themselves before the night is over.
