Maintaining my average update: Week 7
« on: June 20, 2006, 12:18:01 AM »
Five bowlers spraying plastic and me

I must say, I hesitate to even post this update, because I am so embarrassed at my performance.  But, the reason I am doing this is to share my experience with everyone, and hopefully learn a few things along the way.  We had two absent bowlers this week, my wife (she's pregnant and wasn't feeling well) and my Aunt, the only other good bowler on my team.  (Though I hesitate to call myself a good bowler after last night!)  The other team we were playing had one bowler with an average over 100, and she was at 105.  All four were using house balls and spraying them all over the place.  My mom is the other bowler on our team, and she throws an old Judy Sutar plastic ball up the middle too.  The other team also had a 10 year old boy with them who was all over the place, often up on the approach, running around, and basically acting like a 10 year old in a bowling alley.  In one frame, one of the girls threw her first ball, taking out about 4 pins.  Then she went and got a piece of pizza, had a couple bites and took a drink of her beer before going back to shoot the spare.  Later, one of them was on a cell phone ON THE APPROACH LINING UP FOR A SPARE.  Mentally, I lost it.  I didn't have what it took, unfortunately, and I let it get in the way of my executing shots.  I don't blame them, it's my own fault for letting it get in the way.

I also think that the spray of plastic everywhere was affecting my reaction.  I just could NOT get a read on it.  Neither my Doom nor my Big One gave me any degree of success.  The reaction just seemed really spotty, two nearly identical shots would act completely different.  It didn't help that my release was off for the first part of the night either.  My other problem was I think I was making far too many adjustments.  I must have tried five different lines at least, and had no success with any of them.  I should have just stuck to my comfort zone and tried to make the shot work.  I was leaving splits left and right, I had four the first game, 2 in the second, and another four in the third.  My spare conversion was also poor.  So then, here are my scores to one of the worst bowling nights in my life, both in terms of my game and the environment.

126  154  126

Ouch babe, very ouch.

I actually did try an outside line with the Doom, but it was too much ball, even with me taking my hand out of it.  If I had a milder ball, I would have been using it last night.

My average for the summer is down to 179 from 186 after this performance.  My average in fall leagues ended at 165, but I've been bowling great this summer until the last two weeks.

Plastic'll do that you you.  Every league has that one team that's either new or acts like it, throwing plastic straight down the middle.  We've got one (to be fair, one guy has a Big One, though I don't know why, and another has what looks like an old 80-grit black urethane ball).  They're frustrating, both because they completely destroy any semblance of an oil pattern and because, coupled with that, one of them will get on a tear for at least two or three frames, giving them an easy win.

There's not much you can do about it.  It's the worst kind of carrydown, and it basically turns the lanes into 50+ feet of medium to medium-light oil.  Conventional light-oil wisdom is long-and-sharp ball reactions (look at balls like the Power Groove, Tropical, Punisher) and that definitely doesn't apply.  You need a dull, even ball to have any hopes of picking up a decent roll, but you'll never find a factory ball with a surface like that for lighter oil.

Maybe a milder, matte solid reactive would work.  The now-discontinued PG solid/sanded (not the black one, though) might work.  A Hot Wire might work.  Or play their game: chuck it up the middle and hope for the best.

Sorry to hear that your average dropped like that.  Seven pins in one night.  Dang.

I feel your pain...I was under the same kind of situation last night...
Bowler 1--no revs, playing outside 10 with a big one?!?
Bowler 2--no thumb, crazy revs house ball playing a swing near 12
Bowler 3--no thumb, crazy revs tornado playing 3rd arrow
Bowler 4--no thumb, crazy revs playing 4th arrow to about 7...

I've never had so many splits...trying to find a line was definately a challenge.

Splendor,
You should do what I did a few years ago.  Bowling in a summer adult-child league with my son, I encountered a very similar situation to yours - a clueless mom with two little kids, including a three year old boy who was in the settee area almost all the time - he was on the approach the rest of the time.  Did I mention that he wasn't bowling?  Did I mention that mom had a babysitter with her?  Sounds like a good thing, right?  Wrong!  The babysitter had gone off to bowl with her boyfriend in another part of the bowling center.

I was in the same boat as you were.  I was totally losing it.  I finally went over to the bar and got myself a beer (normally, I never would do this when bowling with my son), and sat at one of the concourse tables two PAIRS away from where I was bowling.  I would watch for my son to finish bowling, since I followed him in the lineup, and go bowl.  As soon as I was finished with my frame, I would retreat to my perch two pairs away, and sip my beer.

Next thing I knew, my game was over and I had shot 279 - whoo-hoo!  What a difference a little isolation made.

BTW, did I mention that this mom and her little seven-year-old girl (the best behaved one of the entire entourage) were my teammates by random draw?  It was a long summer.  The crowning blow was on the last night of bowling, when the league provided pizza and soft drinks to the bowlers.  The babysitter and her boyfriend ate all of our pizza.    I made sure we had teammates we knew lined up for the next summer.

Sorry for the rant - I didn't intend for this to get quite as out of control as it did - I hope you'll forgive the partial thread hijack.

Thanks all, I'm glad to hear that others can feel my pain.  It really hurt what has been a good summer so far.  I'll just try to pick it back up next week, we are bowling against one of the better teams, so I should be able to at least find a line!

Well, again you say your DOOM was too much ball for playing the outside.  I still say you should get a dry lane ball, but that's me.

The 'DOOM is too much ball' seems to be popping up more than once in your weekly updates.

Yes, I actually expect to get a Tropical Storm or PP EX in the next week or so.

Oh, hot!

Warning: if you get a Tropical Storm, be careful about drilling it too strong.  Remember that you want this to be the opposite of your DOOM and this ball can be kind of strong from what I hear some people say.  I haven't experienced this problem personally, but for reference I have the stroker release and about medium ball speed and the ball is not drilled aggressive at all.

Anyways, your pro shop person should know exactly what you are going for.

My girlfriend just bought a Tropical Storm to try to learn how to hook it.  She has low ball speed and the thing hooks all the way across the lane!  I wasn't expecting that.

I would recommend the VIBE to anyone. The Doom is a VIBE on steroids(LOL). I got mine when they first came out a year ago just for a particular tournament I bowl in every year down in Wilmington,N.C. It's a great ball for down and in, goes long and hits hard. I bought my wife one two weeks ago for this same tournament. She kept coming around the ball too quick the first game and shot 155. I told her to stay behind the ball more and she followed that game with a 212 & 235. You might be able to get one for a good price, I DID!!!!!!!!!!!

The blue Vibe looks pretty hot.  I bet it doesn't smell as good as a Tropical though.

You know what though?  Compared to your DOOM, I doubt you have to worry that much on these light oil balls as far as that goes.

Ahhh the years of practicing with 3-10 year olds yelling and screaming running around and even cutting me off in my approach. Bowling with alot of distractions is great practice for your mental concentration game.
