We have a split season here. 16 teams, two 15-week halves (I know it's the wrong number of weeks, but that's what we voted on). The way we pay out is as follows:
Take the whole prize fund, take out money for special awards (high team/individual game/series handicap/scratch, high average, most improved). Those are year-long awards.
The remaining prize fund, we split in half. Each half of the season pays out half the prize money. If you finish, say, first in the first half, you get the first half's first place prize money. If you then finish, say, 15th in the second half, you get the second half's fifteenth place prize money.
The winners of the two halves roll off at the end of the year for an additional bit of prize money.
We only distribute money at the end of the season.
I like the split season. We were doing poorly in the beginning, ended up I think in seventh. We then took off, finishing 47-13 for the second half, going 30-0 towards the end. A common problem with single whole seasons is that teams toward the bottom tend to stop showing up when they have no chance of getting any worthwhile money. At least if they bowled well the first half, they'll get something for their efforts.
