Bowling Shirt Ripoffs
« on: July 04, 2003, 11:48:22 PM »
Am I the only one who thinks that ball mfrs have a lot of nerve charging over 50% markup on their shirts, which when you wear them, essentially make you into a walking billboard for their products?

These polo shirts that Ebonite, Storm, Track, even Lane #1, charge 50-65 bucks for, can be bought for $20-30 on eddiebauer.com.  If they were slapping a logo with my name on the shirt, I could understand the markup.  But I have to pay them 2x the price of the shirt to advertise their stuff to other bowlers???

This especially makes no sense for a small company like Lane #1.  No one where I bowl has ever heard of Lane #1, wouldn't know a Buzzsaw if they fell over one.  Lane #1 should be giving their shirts away, or at the very most, charging their cost.

Whaddya think?

I agree with you.  At one time, items were given out free or at a very reduced cost to the customers to promote advertising.  But, at some point, customers started to wear certain items as a prestige factor and the companies were quick to mark up the prices.  Usually this is sports related, look at professional sports teams, and say, Nike, as examples.

If people would quit paying the ridiculous prices, they might change there philosophy and sell them at a more reasonable cost.

I had my Pro shop guy say he could get me any of the new Track shirts for $48 and I told him he was crazy!! I won't pay $48 for work shirt..

I would like to have a couple of shirts to show off the equipment I like to use, but not at the prices they charge now..

jkiser hit the nail on the head.  Supply vs. Demand.  If there weren't enough people buying them for that price, the companies wouldn't be selling them for that price.  People seem to identify themselves with corporations for some reason - which I don't particularly understand.  If you're on the payroll, that's one thing - but to pay your own money to advertise for them is beyond me.

It would be a nice gesture (and good marketing IMO) for them to offer a free shirt with a new ball purchase.  If not for any ball purchase, maybe for the mid-perfomance lines and up, or at least for the guys who dump $200+ for the latest and greatest release (although that's not me either!)  That's the only way you'll see me wearing one.

I buy 'em off Ebay. I got two fantastic storm shirts for a total of $24 a couple of months ago (including shipping)...

Mumzie,

My problem is, I am off the bigger variety (size xxl) and its hard to find those size shirts on Ebay. I did snag a XL Hammer shirt 2 weeks ago for 5 bucks plus shipping.
