Newbie moment here
« on: March 31, 2004, 04:40:32 AM »
OKay, I think I'm finally on my way to becoming a good bowler!  Remember me, I'm the bowler who taught myself to hook in February?  Yeah, well, I'm finally getting good.  I've worked on everything, and for the past 3 sessions, I've averaged around 170-180.  That may not seem like much, but considering up until now, I have average 130, that is good.  I expect to bowl my first 600 either this week or next.  If not for 4 open frames last Saturday, I would have had it!

I know you don't care, and this isn't that amazing, but now I feel that during my next league, I'll average close to or at 200.

And what I like even more is now I can show up this one annoying idiot who keeps calling me a hack and says I'm not nearly as good as him with his 147 average....

I think this is my 3rd post that really has nothing to do with anything.  Oh well.

Yeah, I know 200 is steep, but it's something to aim for.

I think making goals is something very important whether you average 100 or 220,goals need to be made and you should strife to achieve them...Just gotta make sure your goals are reachable. You cant go from 120 and say I want a 300 by next year, just pace yourself and have fun learning and getting better.

I don't expect to have 300 for a couple of years...

If I bowl another good 500 on Saturday, I'll be convinced I'm getting better.

I find myself bowling better when I'm not trying to shoot 600 or 550 or whatever the number maybe be, but just going and making the best possible shot I can during that frame...May just be me though....I do like to know what I need to shot to win though...

Yeah, the reason for my increased ability is due to my extreme ability to handle any pressure.  If i need a 4 bagger to get 200 to close out a set, I probably will.  I'm starting to call myself "Mr. Clutch"!    I'm gonna see if our team will put me as anchor.  I'm pretty much the only one who won't pull a Lonnie.  (not bagging on Lonnie, of course).

Strange, I just don't feel that "thing" when someone says "We need you to strike to win"....I'm cool as ice for some reason now.  Maybe my confidence has risen, that's why...

I probably won't average 200 for a while.  MY home house is one of the toughest in the area, and it's not just a newbie speaking.  I think we have had maybe 1 person average 210 in any of the leagues....in fact the top 3 in the whole league setup are 210, 209, and something like 204.  Kinda messed up.

consistency....... try bowling at the 170-190 level for a couple of years, work on spares, not strikes....

just my 2 cents.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about strikes right now.  I usually get a turkey per game, so I just focus on my spares.  If i can keep a 170 average for a while, I'll be happy.

I want a no-tap tourney!!  Can you say, 800?  But seriously, they give like $50 to the winner!  It's so easy!  Especially since I leave a lot of single pin spares....that's pretty much all i leave nowadays.

That's a great goal - and one I share with you for next season!  I averaged 183 last year and 185 this year, but the last 6 weeks of the season really showed me what I am capable of!  After finding this site I've been able to learn a LOT about facets of the game that I knew nothing about... this has helped my game tremendously and has also put a fire under my a $ $ to get better.  My goal is to average 200 next year and I plan on practicing a lot this summer to give myself the best chance at it.
Good luck to you in your next league!

Yeah really King!

"I just shot 700!"
"Really?  Great!"
"Actually, it was no-tap."
"Oh, well then, I'm sure all of your strikes were real, right?"
"Uh..............."

AM not A CHICK OF BOWLING but I wanted to be in Manda's clique And why would I "saw" pins in half, THATS A WASTE OF PINS! I'd rather blow it over with my storm, and 21mph ball speed on dry shots.

I just started bowling a few months ago and my average is probably up around 175-180 now.  I have always been able to just pick something up and be pretty good at it in almost no time.  I know 175-180 isn't very good but for just starting I think it's pretty good.  EXCALIBER and friend I found on these boards can tell you how much I have improved in only 3 months or so.  The pro at our local center was pretty impressed too.  I am alot older than some of you younger guys so that also helps, but it does show if you are practicing the right techniques it doesn't take long to become a pretty decent bowler.
