Pro Bowler vs. Joe Bowler
« on: November 21, 2008, 12:40:21 PM »
Anyone seen this article on the USBC website regarding the PBA's Ultimate Scoring Championship?
Here is a link, it's quite the article:
http://bowl.com/articleView.aspx?i=15051&f=1

Opinions on it?

My thoughts I took a little offense to being called "Joe Bowler" by the USBC. But the USBC could care less about "Joe Bowler".  We pay our membership dues, yet get no say in what they do, sorry that's different post.

Back to the tournament.
According to them I would fit the "Competitive Bowler" category. Fine, whatever.
47 of the 64 bowlers averaged 220 on a so-called easy condition.

Which means 17 PBA bowlers couldn't average 220 over 14 games.
Here's a link to the results page of that tournament:
http://www.pba.com/livescoring/qual_results.aspx?RoundID=1168

Some scored really well, some didn't score as high as you thought they might.

Bragging on how 4 of the Pro's averaged over 240 for 14 games is not doing the Pro's justice, I've done that and I'm sure many of you out there have too.
The pro's ARE that good, we get it, just like in every other sport it takes great talent and hard work to achieve the status of "Professional".

I wonder how Randy and Rob are going to call this tournament, I'll be very interested on how BAD they make "Joe Bowler" feel compared to "Pro Bowler".
Also, is "Joe Bowler" related to "Joe the Plumber"?

No. Unfortunately, you are confusing Joe the Bowler with Joe Bowler.

TTC,

So you've averaged over 240 for 14 games on a PBA shot?    Thats what your saying right?

As for the THS the PBA put out,, its still a PBA conditioned EASY shot.    So it's not going to just be the normal House shot that most places put out on league night.   So just going out there and doing a grip n rip on the lanes isnt going to happen.

Now as for averages, that doesnt mean squat in a tourny, how many times have you seen someone avg 230+ one week, but the next week they might avg 200.  It's all about matching up and having a shot on the lanes.

Here's a fun fact for you,  my first Regional tourny i did (2001), they put out a PBA Wall Shot,  the leader after 10games was Sean Quinn @ like +500 for 10games, yet his league avg in the house was 235.   So does that mean the PBA Shot was easier than the THS in league???

Anyone notice who wrote the article on bowl.com?

Is that br.com's very own, GJK?

What made this tournament a joke is the fact that they weren't bowling on a house shot like we do.  They had massive OB out around 5, if the ball got there it would go straight.  If you kept the ball in the track it was wide open, but there was some serious penalty for leaking it outside a little too much.

If you're going to call it a strikefest...make it a strikefest.

How many times in the past has a 220 league bowler thought he could compete with the pro's?  This bowler try's a PBA event only to avg. 160's and 170's on the tougher PBA patterns!

I think the PBA is trying to show Joe bowler that the easy conditions are why many avg. 200+ and their correct in pointing this out.

Let's face reality here.  Walk into most leagues and you will find a lot of 200+ avg. bowlers that couldn't avg. 200 on PBA conditions.

The article also goes on to explain the pattern.

The oil ratio was 6-1 as opposed to 8-1 or higher in some houses.

So while the pattern was easy by PBA Standards, it was still harder than your regular house shot.

Very correct,   I see alot of guys even in my poo-dunk town, who avg, 190+ and have the worst form/mechanics I've ever seen...  And these guys, "think" they are good, and I know they couldnt average thier IQ on a PBA condition.

I think the best bowler I've seen in my town in on the Ferris State Bowling team, i mean he throws a damn nice ball, and only averages probably 215.

I average 200, but I can admit I don't have good form, decent at best.  I have the basics but nothing special in my opinion.  I'm in a PBAX league averaging 173 and that alone tells you I'm not good.  I'm in touch with reality unlike some of those high-average guys that really are no better than me.

Go to Jeff Carter's web site he explains the week in detail. www.JeffCarterBowling.com  I talked to 3 or 4 guys that bowled they all said that it was way over/under. Said the carry at Taylor was not great.
