Bowling state of union
« on: January 30, 2007, 12:20:48 AM »
I have bowled leagues since I was ten.  I am not 26 and have seen the sport dwindle every year and wonder why.  I think its this.  Bowling has become a joke in part due to corporate run centers.  I bowl in a center that went and changed the lane condition from a somewhat tough to a walled up easy shot.  I was asked this question as I was bowling last night "what I thought of the lane condition" this was from one of the employees.  One I told the kid I hated it, I do not approve of making condition easier.  Two I know that I am not anywhere near a 230 avg bowler.  I shot 701 with five opens last night and threw the ball bad.

I asked this employee why you would justify changing the shot when the purpose is to adjust and conquer a condition.  Never got a response.

But my question is this many center in my area will not run the challenge shot and refuse to the pba sport shot.  Why because they do not want to run away the bowlers.  Why would you not offer a challenge to people who want it?  Does anyone have a response or suggestion?  I hate to say this but I am almost tempted to walk into my league next week and quit b/c all I am going to do is pay to shoot 700.  Thats not bowling that mailing scores in.

From the management side, it's a matter of profit.  How many bowlers do you think would sign up for a tough shot league?  I'll bet it's not as many as you think.  Now, to prepare the lanes for that group, the oiling machine has to be set on a different program.  Then to get the shot right, the machine has to be run at least a dozen times before starting to oil that block of lanes.  To go back to the regular program for the other lanes, reset the program and run another dozen blanks.  And all this is assuming the house does have an oiling machine that is capable of changing the shot easily.  If the tough shot league is an early league, the change back would have to be made before the second league begins.  It's just too much trouble for a handful of bowlers.  Now, if all the leagues would agree to the tough shot, no problem.  --  JohnP

From what you guys are saying, it sounds like the shots should always be easy for league bowlers to keep them feeling fluffy and warm.  Now for those of you who want a different shot, the PBA Experience should be rolling out in your area.

The AMF center where I use to work has started to help bowlers out with the PBA shot which is a real suprise. They are going to do it every other Sunday and put it on 6 lanes. First come first serve.

This week I got to bowl on the Scorpion. That shot to me is a modified house shot, then you get carry down and all hell breaks loose. That shot becomes one major pita with that carrydown.

I think ALL houses should introduce something like this. Have a weekly or every other week PBA or Sport shot but only stick it on a certain amount of lanes and let it be first come first serve.

AND although it is first come first serve, people will be cool and let you jump on the lane with them. Just ask!

Sorry JohnP, but today's machines are not that hard to set up for more than one shot.  And they do NOT need to run a dozen or more lanes to be truly laying the new shot!  It's not that difficult, and the only way to find out how many bowlers will accept the challenge, is to OFFER IT!

They only care about the bottom DOLLAR, and not their bowlers, and that's why they are losing them!

Thats the catch-22 Cbjdc... For those who understand bowling should be earned and not giving tougher conditions is warranted. But the majority of bowlers in bowling today are ones who have ONLY experienced this new scoring frenzy and dont understand what us olders guys are saying. So the concensus is to make the scoring pace easy and we are out voted and in such insufficent numbers that we cant hardly get one league in our towns to provide a "fair" condition. As todays bowlers constantly say... bowling has changed... if you dont like it quit otherwise, shoe up and shut up. That philiosphy is very typical of the general population today as well.

issue I have is that I was told that under no circumstances would there be a pba league. They did not want that type of league in there.
