Observation....playing one line.
« on: January 31, 2013, 07:01:25 PM »
Call me crazy, but I enjoy practicing. I can work on what ever I want and I get to try new things. I take different balls with me to lanes. Like some nights I only throw plastic. Example: Last night I decided to play up the 2 board with my Urethane ball and actually was having some success. I also enjoy watching other people throw.

I observe many bowlers who come in and the play the same line as they do in league. Week after Week (Year after Year). It seems so dull and repetitive.

I know one guy who plays his line so much on a practice night (cheap prices), after so many games and his ball is jumping on the head pin. He will go to the desk and ask if he can move to another lane. When he does...Bingo! Its back to striking again on his line.

All these bowlers on their line are true masters to the sport. They know immediatly how their ball reacts, they know if they made a good or bad shot. The image of the ball breaking towards the pocket is burned into their minds.

Most of these bowlers don't venture out much. They don't bowl in other centers. They don't bowl any tournaments. Most are not interested in trying anything new. When its time to get a new ball, they go to the pro shop and try find an exact replacement.

They keep the game simple. They like knocking down the pins. They love playing their line and they are very good at it.

Just sharing my thoughts from last night's practice.

That's why this is a great sport.  Different options for different bowlers.  Whatever makes you happy.

Most want different balls to play the same line no matter how much or little oil is there so they dont have to move or adjust. It isnt that simple but I guess its nice to hope.

This is why I bring 5 balls - so I can try to play in my comfort zone, which is down and in, but if the lanes wont let me I will make adjustments, move left and swing it, if I have to, but if you have the proper ball with the proper cover you maybe able to stay close to your shot. I also bowl in more than one house and in some tourneys, if I can play my shot I will, if I cant I wont, it is that simple.

I see this all the time with House Hacks......  they have 1 shot and if it's not there, they cant score....

last year in the old house i bowled in i noticed it on several occasions..

 - guy on opposing team starts out 279-259... well i notice at the end of the 2nd game everything was checking up a bit early and i was playing deeper than everyone on both teams lol...  Well third game rolls around and said guy has his ball check up early the whole game and he struggles to bowl 160...

Another time the lane machine went on the fritz lol and put out a IDK what kind of oil pattern.. well same guy as above was complaining because he had to play " left " of 3rd arrow lol....  I looked at him and seriously said CRY!!  and did the ole finger wipping a tear away from my eye...   And the stupid part was the " shot " was actually right up the gutter...

Again lol last yr one of the guys on my old team who LOL bowls almost every day at this place couldnt figure out why his ball was struggling to get to the pocket..  Well i told him they are using a different oil pattern that is 2 ft longer than the previous year.   And told him to try using a different ball or using a ball that has some more surface.    But he was so flipping stubborn that he would continue to use a ball that he bought the year before ( motiv primal tv4 ) that he used all last year in all of his leagues...

But everyone at this " bowling alley " could be put into this category lol... they seriously do not go outside of this house to bowl anything...

Every league has this kind of bowler. 1 averages 235. If he bowls anywhere else he can't break 200 for the life of him and comes up with some excuse to why hes struggling.

Fortunately I'm not that type of bowler. I'm not afraid to try different lines with different balls. It's not out of the ordinary that I play the outside line 15-7 with urethane then out of nowhere change balls and play 25-8. All the while these one line wonders look at me like I'm certified nuts yet I manage to "out score" him to his amazement. Then has the nerve to ask how I did what I did knowing he will never venture outside his comfort zone.
