Bowling Tendonitis + Help
« on: January 24, 2005, 09:40:51 PM »
Hi –

My sister-in-law is an avid bowler and has hurt her hand / finger ligaments.  She hurt herself at the ball release, she over hit-up on the ball and strained the ligaments. She has tendonitis from the ring finger to the elbow.  She would appreciate some help!  Is this common? Typical healing time?   Advice on returning to bowling? Preventive measures for the future? Do you have any special wrist support suggestions for this issue?

Thanks –

Denny

Once you have it, there's a life long tendency towards it.
Rest time depends on badly you hurt them and how quickly you can heal.

A product called Steel Fingers helps the finger tendonitis. I know that from experience. See http://steelfingers.com/

For the arm and elbow, there are other devices.

If necessary, a cortisone shot directly into the bone/joint can help. It can be very painful.

Dakota,

Had the same issue myself.  Cut down on my practice for a while.  Actually helped my game in the long run.  Not being able to hit-up as much allowed me to really improve my stright game.

Another guy in my league had the same thing, but worse than me.  What worked for him was drilling a hole for his pinky.  It took the pressure off of his ring finger enough without sacrificing hit.  Once healed, he just stopped putting his pinky in the hole.  Seemed to work for him.

In no particular order:
First - get span and pitches checked by someone other than who drilled the ball.
Second - no bowling for several weeks - the finger tendons are nothing to mess with.
third - span will probably always be slightly different than it used to be - to avoid overstretching those tendons again.
Fourth - don't get a cortisone shot - makes the tissue brittle, and prone to tearing more. Yes, it helps pain, but it does nothing for healing.
Fifth - if she uses a computer, switch the mouse to the non bowling hand.
Sixth - get to a doctor - so that he can prescribe physical therapy - preferably by a certified hand specialist.
Seventh - from now on, use a wrist brace that will provide support to the back of the wrist. Something like the "columbia glove with wrist support" http://www.bowling.com/display.asp?SKU=23048r
If I pick up a bowling ball without it, I can really feel it.

Been there, done that, feeling it right now as I type.

I carry a few baggies in my bag for when my tendonitis acts up.After a session I fill a baggie with ice from the concession and ice down the area for 15-20 minutes. This helps promote healing of the torn tissue.I find that if I do this right after bowling and again the following nites at home the pain lessens considerably.

A doctor will give the best advice for therapy, rehab etc. but for immediate relief ice packs are the way to go.

This is sort of a P.S. to Mumzie's advice as I agree with all the points she made.

Hey Denny,

First recommendation is to see a physician in regards to how bad the strain is, I'd personally never want to take chances at something that can possibly cause long term or permanent damage.  The physician should be able to tell her when she can return to the sport.

I've had and seen many small strains or pulls in my time.  It can be caused by various actions, span a little long, fingers hung up on a particular shot and trying to over turn the shot.  You may want to also have the pitches on the fingers checked out to make sure there isn't too much forward pitch.

For prevention, I recommend a splint.  It's a device that runs across your forearm and ties down your tendons keeping them from expanding and contracting too much which is where our strain tends to come from.  Basically, it's a piece that encompasses both a wrist and tennis elbow type strap to help subdue tendons/muscles/ligaments.  Hope this helps and good luck to her...
