Using a ball to break down lanes
« on: May 04, 2010, 01:07:10 PM »
I have two balls that I don't use much and am thinking about sanding one of them down to break down the lanes during practice of my pba league. I was wanting to know which of these coverstocks are stronger and would soak up more oil. The Storm X-factor duece or Columbia 300 Perfect Rival.

How much practice do you get??? You are going to need a number of shots to burn in a good spot... why not just try and get better like the pbax was designed to help you do instead of trying to make it easier?

Just be careful when doing this and make sure you're breaking down the right part of the lane. Too often people put themselves in jail doing this making the lanes too wet/dry.

You do know what he is suggesting is how the pros tackle the patterns, right?

The pros also get a good deal of practice.   I know in my league I'm lucky if I get 3 practice shots per lane - that's 8-10 people on a pair and depends on how many of those people have to reset the pins (or intentionally foul) because they insist on throwing at a full rack (or assume that everybody else wants a full rack).

Not much you can in 5 minutes.

Plus the pros are very accurate, so they hit the same spot over and over to break it down quickly.  If you spray it around, you won't really do much good.

Parker Bohn III was asked the same question and he said to be careful because of the exact reasons northface28 and strider stated.

However, at least in PBA leagues around here, the number of bowlers is sparse and the OP might be able to throw a lot of shots to break them down.

I have broken down long, shark-like patterns in 10 minutes with 6 on a pair.  As you guys have said, you gotta have the time and you gotta be careful.  If you are trying to create friction and you pull couple, you remove any chance of hold inside.  Likewise, if you are trying to carry oil down and push it, you will create an even greater hang spot.

The thing that is just as important as breaking the lanes down in your favor is watching what the other bowlers are doing.  Stay inside the guys throwing charcoal.  Stay outside the spinners throwing shiny.  If you switch lanes between games, try to keep an eye on what they are doing there as well.

We bowled a tournament over the weekend and in practice we were able to get about three shots each for the pair.  That was one ball less than the minors at the nats!
