C'mon, Time to Fess Up (Admit your weakness)
« on: August 25, 2003, 01:35:30 AM »
I was just curious, if there is anything that really unnerves you at a bowling alley.  Is there anything that really breaks your concentration?

Here is our chance to come clean and help each other through our weak moments, or just learn how to mess eachother up

I,ve always had the problom of dragging my shots 2 or 3 boards inside my target.
Now its nowhere near as bad as it used to be but once I start missing to the
left I can't seem to stop it.

As far as breaking my concentration we always have music blaring in the centre
during league. Our league uses lanes 11-24. Mounted on the wall next to lane 24
is one of the speakers and when your at the foul line that speaker is only a
metre or two away from you. I feel like I get a facefull of vibrations from the
dam thing.

Over my last two tournaments a couple of glaring problems have shown their ugly heads. The first was dealing with a center with excessive heat and maintaining focus. The second a tough condition showed what should have been obvious for sometime. You can't be something your not. I was a stroker in the old days and for years had success as a pure tweener. In my wisdom I thought I could crank the ball and play that big inside hook with the kids. Well, on a wide open house shot I can. The last two weeks proved that is not my game and if I want to leave the tournaments with a check I better get back to what I do best. Accuracy, consistency and making spares. Take advantage of the strings when they come and leave the makable stuff, not spits and washouts. I had to hit bottom to see the obvious, but the proof was in the final score and it was UGLY.

Knowing I need to utilize the deep inside line to score. It pisses me off i have worked very long and hard but still suck at it. The 7-pin is my demise. Another item i have worked on but mentally it can take my head out of the game when missing them. Failure- I hate to fail, so when struggling i go into total brain-fart (freeze)disorder. Summed up=mental game needs a lot of work with slight physical adjustments relating to lowering my track.

Well for the past 2 years I have been bowling with one of my students and the biggest weakeness has been staying focused on my game. Often I will see that she is reading the lane wrong, has the wrong piece in her hand, approach issues, or whatever the problem may be all I know is that I am not concerned about my own game. When it is time for me to make an adjustment I will make it mentally but forget by the time I get to my next shot. So this year I am going to allow her to spread her own wings and if she needs help then she can ask me. Am I doing the right thing? But it was quite evident the nights that we did not bowl with each other my performance was more consistent. My game is usually pretty solid when I can detect my problems and focus on me. But if would have to pick one weakness it would be staying patient on the grind out shots. I would take the one or two 190-20? then I would get impatient and do some drastic.

Hey guys, I will add mine now.
CtR-kowski mentioned it earlier, its silence.  I love the sound of bowling, and am used to people getting excited and carrying on.  I dont even mind when people are watching me.  But it always gets to me when things go dead quiet. This happened in my signiture, when I had my first 8 straight, although I hit my ankle because my 8th strike was a touch outside, so I over compensated and went way inside, off the ankle and down the gutter.   However, it also gets to me if Im the only person there.

I can bowl with almost any distraction, but silence gets to me.  Bowling alleys are no place for silence, this isnt golf!! (Although golf is a blast)
Only thing that makes me mad is when someone decides that their strike celebration needs to come into my lane when Im trying to bowl.  Stay on your own side people!

Update: Extremely short (dry) reverse blocks........I do not mind going into the out of bounds and playing through that but sometimes even that oil does not stand up for the duration of the tournament. Once that becaomes spotty then I am in for a LOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGGG Day.

My weakness is advise. I was bowling very well last year.
Then people started telling me I was doing everything wrong. I would listen and try what they told me. Average dropped. Ok i think well i will take some lessons. Took a few from a very good Pro bowler. Average dropped. I tried top go back to my old style this summer. Guess what? Forgot how I used to bowl.

So from now on, I will work on this myself. I know the difference in a good shot and a bad one. I can usually tell what I did wrong by the time the ball hits the lane.

It may look wrong to others, but I will find my old style again and get my game back!!!

Weaknesses/Annoyances/Distractions:

1) Girls in tight pants/tops.  Sorry, but I just have to be honest.  Thongs only add to the problem.

2) The major explosion of "ohhhh's" that occur when the 12th shot hits the pocket and leaves a solid tap.

3) People who slap hands for everything.  "Nice split *slap*"

4) People who ask "How do you spin a ball like that?"  Years of practice, Grasshopper.

5) People with 135 averages asking me, "Can I give you a tip?"  Uh, no.

6) Missing easy spares due to rushing.

7) Solid 7 pins.

8) People who ask incredulously, "You bowl?"  Like it's some kind of social disease.

9) The stupid doctor on my league who thinks my Chiropractor is a quack.  Considering I averaged 228 during the 3 months I went to the chiropractor, I wouldn't care if he's a cannibalistic witch doctor as long as I keep bowling like that.

10) Doubles tournaments where I shoot 650 and my partner shoots 450.  I'm never getting talked into it again.

11) Teammates who fail to understand that count is a helluva lot more impressive at the end of the night than "almost getting" a glaring split while missing it entirely.  This is especially annoying after a strike.

There are probably more, but I'm too tired to think of them.  There are a lot more things I like about bowling, so don't think to yourself, "Man, this guy must hate league night."  I bowl, I bowl hard, and I bowl to win.  I may sometimes take myself a little too seriously out there, but most of the time I am hang-loose.

Cheers.

I have some jinxes too!

Mine are list below this sentence!

1)When a woman that turned you down on a couple of dates
a week earlier(aka Ok,I'll go out with you some other time)and
SHOWS up with another fella! My bowling goes down the toilet!!

This happened roughly around April of last year.I could NOT get
anything better than a 160 that night,period!!

I couldn't find my mark, umm what ball ta throw!I think she showed up on purpose!
My knees got weak and couldn't follow through either, yuck!!!

Thats a weakness(temporary though),I really dug her and I though she dug me,BUT I was worng(aka wring,thats wrong.

1a)Same thing,but when I see a woman and she's by hereself.Especially a 30's lady(aka ANY single female in that departmant)bowler,better yet she can BOWL!!!!!! I choke,and go to a thousand and sixty two pieces(aka I SUCK!!!)!

To this day I can't figure it out,but I'm still doing my best to fix this
kink with women at tha bowling alley.I still mess up,whether she's a 200 ave or 132 ave,I still choke!A neato looking beauty can jinx my game any day,but I love this weakness.I guess as long as its open play though!

2) When you get like 4 or 5 strikes in a row,and you hear the next lane clapping
really loud, you're working on a another strike and the same people yell and clap BEFORE you even walk the approach, huh?Huh??I haven't got the sixth strike yet,gee wiz.I ""appreciate the spot attention, but I need ta concentrate with out a gazillion peeps(aka 15 people) watching your every shot.

A lil' jr spooky.

You know what comes next,Chokeville!!!This kinda urks me a little,BUT I'm trying to fix too.I'll be fair, this curse I'm always trying to correct every
chance I get.

One has to MAKE the whole world(aka peeps that watch you)make invisible, like they never showed up.HHHIJHTTTITIWFAILMAORRL!!!!

4)I get this every night,"Why do throw different balls?".
After I hear this,I even start thinking(aka pondering his/her thought) and
I kinda end up throwing two balls instead of six.

4a)Same,but when I go to the bowling alley ,OVER PREPARRED.I mean bringing
9 bowling balls!!Yep,I typed that right.Thats a weakness too,ya dont know what
to throw sometimes.Ok,its a PART TIME weakness only.I have fixed this probleemo
from time ta time.Ya,just bring 3 balls and WORK it the BEST ya can!!!!

5)Those danggggggggggggggg,splits!!!Nuff typed!

6)This comes after 5.

7)Oh yeah,when you miss an VERY,VERY,VERY EASY SPARE,that makes the difference between a "199 and a 200" game!Oh thats a KILLER ONE!!!!!!!!Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!

8)I have more, but they've been typed by others above my reply, and I'm going to the thrift store now to look for more bowling balls!

I'll post somewherze elze!

Moral ta post;Fix your jinxes, you'll be glad you did!

L8 peeps!

Haha, an easy one. My home house has some rather forgiving approaches. When i stand in the right gutter to make 7 pins (lefty) right where i slide the approach dips when weight is applied and you tend to overslide to the tune of 2-4 inches causeing a foul... that hurts when your on front 6... then again leaving the 7 on front 6 hurts too...
