The 11th Frame: New BTM owner aiming for February launch of digital edition

The new owner of Bowling This Month is aiming for a February launch of the new digital BTM, the company’s ball reviewer told 11thFrame.com.
The owner still isn’t revealing his identity, but wants to get some information out about the new BTM, Eric Martinez said in a message to me.
Martinez owns a pro shop in San Antonio, Texas, has written all the ball reviews for BTM for the last 4 years and was a tester for BTM for 5 years before that.
“Complimentary trial subscriptions will be offered to current BTM readers to fulfill their remaining subscriptions,†is a statement in a PDF Martinez sent me that is attached to this blog.
Martinez said he will continue to do the ball reviews.
“We will be having the same testers and process for reviewing all the bowling balls,†Martinez said. “There might be a few little changes that are for the best.â€
“With a ‘new start’ we're going to keep the great information from the past,†Martinez added, “the most successful parts of the reviews, which are the 3d charts comparing all the balls despite them being different brands, and the at-a-glance review, a chart with the last 6-8 months of product comparing the length, torque, backend, and total hook ratings.â€
A key change is that balls won’t be tested on conditions they obviously weren’t designed for.
“Let’s say you pick up to read the review on the (Storm) Natural Pearl,†he said. “Everyone in the bowling world picking up that magazine is going to see the '2/2/3' ratings on the heavy oil test pattern and think, 'Well no kidding, why would you even use that ball on that pattern!?' In the restart, we will not use it on that pattern! Same goes the other way: the Sync wouldn't be thrown on the short dry pattern.â€
Martinez said companies sometimes complained about balls getting lows ratings when tested on patterns they weren’t meant to be used on and, “it also saves the readers having to go through paragraphs explaining why the super aggressive ball didn't perform well on the dry lane condition, which is pretty much common sense to the more technical bowlers that are in our target market.â€
BTM announced at the start of 2014 that it “is officially under new ownership and work has begun to create a new online-only version.†I reported that in this blog, which includes links back to my earlier blogs on the demise of the print version of the magazine.
