Starting approch well behind the dots...
« on: June 13, 2004, 11:46:39 PM »
Is it illegal to start approach waaaaay beyond the dots?? The approach I developed is about 19' from the foul line.

I have to wear a back brace and it's virtually impossible to bend at the waist/lower back like a normal person would. With that said I basically have to burst upto speed with the extra steps, then use an additional 2 steps to slow myself before the foul line. It looks crazy as hell and it's not the most consistent in the world, but I get enough speed/revs to keep my avg about 188 with an 8lb ball.

You can start wherever you want to.  I used to bowl with a guy who sort of started his approach in the settee area.  Never stopped moving once he stood up; grabbed his ball off the rack on the way to the foul line.

The only kind of issue I'd see - for real - is the lane courtesy issue - if everyone around you always knows your style (and why), you'll be fine. If they don't look to really tick some people off.

Is it at all possible to take smaller steps?

Smaller steps make me look/feel more stupid than I already do, plus I cant generate the speed necessary to get good pin action from the light ball.

Parox.... first of all, kudos to you for being a diehard bowler and doing the best with what you have to work with.  Use as much of the approach as you need!  I too have a rather unorthodox approach due to severe degenerative arthritis in both of my knees and know I must look pretty goofy on my approach.  I too use the whole approach in order to generate some speed as it is very hard for me to do any type of deep knee bend.  But, not going to let that stop me from enjoying my absolute favorite pastime.  As long as you're having a good time and not hurting yourself... more power to you!
