Ball Spinner Question
« on: March 17, 2015, 11:42:39 AM »
I have a Vertex Ball Spinner, Id say for about almost 10 years now.  I have a problem where when I put some pressure on the ball ie polishing a ball, I can literally stop the ball from spinning.  Does anyone know if it might be the motor going bad?

There are 2 screws that are interchangeable, which I can take out using an allen wrench I believe hold the belt in place. Lately when I put the spinner down someplace else(where ever I decide to sand or polish a ball) when I turn the spinner on it goes on but the cup wont even start spinning. I have to unscrew the bottom and tighten both of the screws that hold the belt. could it be the screws are getting worn down and I need new screws?

any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

You might need a new belt, the screws are probably tension adjusters and the belt has worn past their limits.

Sounds like the belt is getting worn out, you could try applying some belt dressing. But as old as it is, just go to the auto parts store and get a new one. That little belt is cheap.

bro, if you buy a belt, let me know what size... my vertex is still good and about the same age as yours, and I was thinking about the belt life last night while working the spinner...

Pull the belt out and bring with you to Napa, auto zone, or where ever you go....then text me the size lol

Ok update: I have replaced the Belt, and set screws(also put loctite on) and I can still get the ball to stop when I put semi hard pressure. The motor still runs when I put the pressure on the ball(as if I were putting polish on). Any ideas what else it could be?

If the motor still runs and the ball stops, what is the motor turning? Does the pulley on the motor shaft turn when you stop the ball? Does the belt turn? Something is loose and there are only a couple of places it can be.

If it's not the belt, then check the pulley on the end of the motor shaft. Check the pulley on the end of the ball cup shaft and where the ball cup attaches to the shaft.

If it's not one of those, then the motor may need to be replaced.

bro, you can test pulley the Island style way.....turn on the spinner and grab the pulley, lol if pulley twists or burns your hand, then it's not the pulley. If you can stop the pulley from rotating and the motor/shaft is still spinning, then it's the pulley. Just need to tighten the screw/hex....if it's built that way...i never seen the inside of the spinner....

Bring it friday, I can check it out. remind me to bring tools....

I'll be at West Lane Wednesday around 6 if you want to drop by with it. Sounds like Jay has a good idea of the problem if he is closer to you. I know you used to live down this way, but if you are in Sac now, Jay will be closer.
