"Power step"
« on: January 14, 2010, 11:33:59 AM »
hey guys, quick questions, what is your take on the "power step", or the step right before the slide (4th step for 5 step approach) in terms of length of the step? I have been watching a lot of youtube video's lately and have noticed that there seems to be some variation in the "power step" in higher rev guys (more similar to my own style). I look at 2 guys in particular that have a lot of variation between them, Robert Smith who has a pretty long step and Mike Wolfe who has a pretty short step... both guys have plenty of power obviously, but what is your take on the length of the "power step"? Personally I have a pretty short one, and have tried to make it longer but it throws everything out of time for myself... guess I want to see what everyone's thoughts are on it and then decide if it may be worth working on.

IMO whatever gets your body and your swing to the foul line in time and works for you is OK.  --  JohnP

It must be different for most people, Bill O' Neill takes a pretty normal power step and Norm Duke/Chris Barnes take quicker ones.  It's probably dependent on a couple things such as your swing, cadence to the line before the power step, and timing.  I don't think the power step is something you can force one way or another, or you will throw everything off it's a result of other things.  Although, you may be able to make it quick(when it's naturally slower) and have some success, but I don't think you can go the other way.

that's how it seems for me at least, upon trying to make it longer and slower every aspect of my timing was gone. There seems to be a lot of variation so I would have to say JohnP is right, whatever does it for you is right for you.
