bowling with arthritis
« on: May 08, 2008, 02:53:08 PM »
i was just diagnosed with arthritis in my wrist. I had an incident at work where i let a drill twist my wrist and it isnt healing right . so they took xrays and now they say i have arthritis. I was just wondring if anyone is bowling with arthritis and if so what do you take or use to deal with the pain. If not how was it quitting bowling. I am still trying ,even picked up one of the adjustable wrist braces .But i really suck like this.Shot 428 tonight.I am wondering if i might be done for real this time.

You didn't get arthritis from the injury, it has been there.  Most people
over the age of 50 have arthritis to some degree.  However there are over
fifty different kinds of arthritis and they respond to different treatments
differently.  Go to a physician who specializes and follow the advice.

You don't HAVE to quit.

You might try going lefty.  Could be an interesting challenge!

Arthritis is not fun, I have it in my back and the best thing I could tell you is to stretch really good before and after bowling. A couple of Ibuprofen 800mg helps too. But, seriously, the stretching helps.
With it in your wrist, you might have to ask your doctor for some exercises that'll help.
Another possibility is to take the summer off from bowling, give your wrist some time to heal itself

I've got it in my knees, back, neck, and fingers. Not too big a problem if you find out what works for you.

On bowling days I take 2 - 220mg Naproxen Sodium (Naprosyn) in the morning with breakfast and I'm usually good the rest of the day. Sometimes I need one in the evening, but that's rare.

After bowling I'd strongly recommend ice therapy for your wrist for about 15-20 minutes, which will take down the natural internal swelling as well as numb the pain a bit.

Like justdale said, make sure you warm up and stretch a bit before you start throwing the ball and life will be much easier. Any "new" arthritis (in a new joint) is more painful, but as the years go on it tends to mellow out a little.
Good luck.

I have an artificial hip, arthritis in knees, hands and shoulders. CELEBREX WORKS.  I am not pain free, but have no trouble bowling. I take 400 mg daily, take another 400 mg on days that I need it.

Man if everyone that has arthritis quit bowling the industry would certainly die.  The key is to get your ball refit for as little stress as possible and you might have to drop a pound in weight.

I'm not into the "drug" thing but what type of wrist support did you try?
There is a wide variety of supports available to stabilize that might do the trick!
