bowling with injuries
« on: December 17, 2003, 04:52:53 PM »
In another post people downed this poor guy about faking an injury, and talked about bowling with real injuries and throwing some really great games. I just want to know why anyone would bowl with a severe injury, like rev-o bowling with a blown acl?

Does bowling play such a major part of your lives that you would risk permanent damage and the chance that you may never bowl again, just so you don't miss one night? Is taking the blind for one night really that bad of a thing to do?

Last year I fell down some steps with a basket of laundry and rolled my right ankle.  There was NO WAY I was even going to attempt to bowl until I could walk without limping.  To me, bowling with an injury that could cause permanent damage isn't worth the risk.

because some of us love the game that much, that we don't care about what pain there is. Once i'm, on the lane, all of the pain is gone, except for the pain I unleash on the opposing team!!

I bowled a tournament with strained knee tendons haven't been able to bowl since. Still can't run with out a limp and everytime I slide I have major pain with my tendons twisting and jumping.

Last year when I severely strained my abdominal/inguinal/adductor muscles I took 10 weeks off.  If I had waited until the pain went away entirely I would probably still not be bowling.  Granted, the pain is minimal now, but when I resumed bowling after that 10 weeks off I was much more noticable.

I bowled because I felt like I needed to.  I had made promises to 2 teams that I would be there week after week to bowl.  I stayed out as long as I felt was necessary to recover.  For 10 weeks I had both teams in a lurch trying to cover my absence.  Doing that goes against my nature and I had to correct it as quickly as possible.

Besides, I needed to get 66 games in before the end of the season to qualify for awards.

Yes, bowling is that important to some people.  Some people are just eat up with it.

For me, I see both sides of the story.  It depends on what the injuries are from.  Bowling related, or injury from something else.  You have to know you're own body too.  When I played softball alot, my legs would be sore, but I could bowl through that.  Years ago, I fell playing softball and broke the bursa sac in my left (non-bowling) shoulder.  I didn't bowl for about 4 weeks, but I couldn't do alot of other things either.  My knee aches bad now, but I don't like to slide much and I'm 30lbs over weight, I can bowl through that.  I've had some hand/wrist problems in the last few years, but it seems like I have been bowling really well when the pain crops up.  I've had to take short spirts of time off, to let my hand rest.  Luckily, I'm bowling pain free (except the knee aching) right now,  I just try to rest when I can.

Sorry so long, rambling....

Guess I'm a bit of a hypocrite when it comes to this.  For the most part, I agree with Bones - if it hurts, something is wrong.  However, my knees kill me when I bowl on synthetic approaches, yet I go ahead and do it to the tune of 2 nights per week.

I don't understand it though, my knees have always given me some problems, but wood approaches are fine.  Just the sythetics - even with adjustable soles and heels I still hurt by the 5th in the first game.

I agree with the above statement.
I've been in physical therapy for my wrist and forearm. I finally found a therapist who didn't just say "well stop bowling if it hurts." I've got one who has helped me set the goal for the therapy as "bowling without pain".
She's giving me some tools and tips to work through it (like icing it while bowling, ice massages, etc).

This is what I was afraid of. It seems to me that bowling is as addictive to some people as alcahol, or crack. Rememebr when something gets to the point where you don't think you can survive without it, it's time to seek help.

I guess they need to invent the BA bowlers anonamous. Hey, maybe I should do that, charge ten bucks a night, keep em for three to four hours, and not allow them to touch a bowling ball.
