Can someone explain hand positions to me?
« on: April 19, 2004, 03:50:52 AM »
I understand the finger dancing thing (pinky in, out, tucked, not tucked, index finger in, out, etc), and I understand that different hand positions (thumb position on a clock, cocked wrist, uncocked wrist, etc). But how do I know when to try one vs another???

In other words - when is it better to stay more "behind the ball" or "up the back", and when is it better to come some around the side (NOT around the top -NEVER that...)

I use these types of adjustments regularly, and I thought at one time I understood them, but it seems as though lately I'm just guessing. Any inputs?

Nollster/Girlscout,

You should know, the trek you are taking is the trek that EVERY top notch player has taken and succeeded in mastering. At the end of your journey you will have gone where few today are willing to go and without a doubt you will have increased your bowling ability to sustain an entire career beyond todays specific balls, conditions and reactions. I will point you to Pete Weber being a top notch bowler from the late 70's through today, 3 decades, many equipment and condition changes and still he remains there. Many good bowlers have come and gone around him in those 30 years. This is the ART and SCIENCE of bowling... understanding this will forever change the way people will look at you. I am truely excited for you.

Food for thought - the big "A" (Earl Anthony) claimed to use 40-something different releases.

I must be different than everyone else. I use an up
the back when I cannot control the backends no matter
what oil is laying up front. I also use it when the lanes dry out
on me. For me it gives much more room for error than trying to
swing the ball. The lanes have to be pretty sloppy for me to
swing the ball, else I cannot keep it on the head pin, let alone
in my pocket.

I've been thinking about this topic quite a bit lately.  It seems to me that the hand position you use should be dictated by the desired backend reaction, more up the back if you want a smooth reaction, more on the side if you're looking for a sharp break toward the pocket.

People say to use more side roll to get the ball down the lane when they start to dry out, but that doesn't sound right to me.  Better to use ball surface, speed and loft to control the breakpoint, and hand positions to control backend reaction.
